Gambaran Penyesuaian Diri Pada Remaja yang Memiliki Saudara Autis

ABSTRAK
Remaja merupakan usia peralihan yang disebut sebagai periode storm and
stress. Usia dimana individu mengalami banyak perubahan yang menyebabkan
stres. Remaja dengan saudara autis memiliki stressor tambahan dari kondisi autis
yang dialami saudaranya. Memiliki saudara autis cenderung menempatkan remaja
pada resiko yang lebih tinggi dalam melakukan penyesuaian diri. Namun, tidak
semua remaja yang memiliki saudara autis memiliki penyesuaian diri yang buruk,
ada juga remaja yang memiliki saudara autis memiliki penyesuaian yang baik.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat gambaran penyesuaian diri pada
remaja yang memiliki saudara autis dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya.
Penyesuaian diri akan digambarkan berdasarkan karakteristik penyesuaian yang
dikemukakan oleh Haber dan Runyon (1984) yang terdiri dari persepsi yang
akurat terhadap realitas, kemampuan mengungkapkan perasaan, kemampuan
mengatasi stress dan kecemasan, self-image dan hubungan interpersonal.
Sedangkan faktor penyesuaian diri digambarkan berdasarkan teori Schneider
(1964) yang terdiri kondisi fisik, perkembangan dan kematangan, factor
psikologis, dan kondisi lingkungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan
kualitatif dengan jumlah responden 2 orang dan informan 2 orang yang
merupakan orang tua dari remaja tersebut. Wawancara mendalam digunakan
sebagai metode pengumpulan data.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kedua responden melakukan penyesuaian
diri yang dinamis. Ada waktu dimana responden merasa terpuruk dengan keadaan
yang mereka hadapi dan ada waktu dimana mereka juga merasakan kebahagiaan.
Kedua responden menggambarkan karakteistik penyesuaian diri yang berbeda.
Responden pertama terbuka dengan keadaan saudara autis kepada orang lain
sedangkan responden 2 cenderung untuk menghindari pertanyaan tentang saudara
autis. Responden 1 memiliki pandangan positif terhadap keadaan saudara autis
sehingga memiliki persepsi yang akurat terhadap realitas yang ditandai dengan
kemampuan menetapkan tujuan terhadap saudara autis dan menyadari peluang
dan hambatan dalam mencapai tujuan tersebut. Sedangkan responden 2 belum
mampu menetepkan tujuan terhadap saudara autis. Hal ini disebabkan karena
faktor yang mempengaruhi penyesuaian diri kedua responden juga berbeda.
Kondisi lingkungan dan faktor psikologis secara kuat mempengaruhi penyesuaian
pada kedua responden.

The Adjustment Of Adolescence Siblings Of children With Autism

ABSTRACT
Adolescence is transition age that well-known as the period of storm and
stress. At this stage of development, individuals experienced a lot of changes that
cause stress. The stress experienced by adolescents tends to be higher when they
have a sibling with autism. Adjustment is required to deal with stress in order to
achieve a more prosperous life. However, not all adolescents who have siblings
with autism have poor adjustment, there are also teens who have siblings with
autism well-adjust with their condition. This study investigated how adjustment
in adolescents who have a sibling with autism experienced and the factors
influence how they adjust with their condition. Adjustment will be described
based on the characteristics of the adjustment proposed by Haber and Runyon
(1984). These characteristics consist of accurate perception of reality, ability to
cope with stress and anxiety, ability to express feeling, self-image and
interpersonal relationship. The factor that influence of adjustment consist of
physical condition, psychological factor, development and maturity, social
condition, and culture, custom, and religion proposed by Schneider (1964).
This study used a qualitative approach with a two respondents. Parents as
informant used to increase credibility of this research. In-depth interviews are
used as a method of data collection .The results indicated that both of
respondent adjust with the condition they experienced was dynamic. Both of them
showed different characteristic of adjustment. Sometimes they depressed with the
demand of their condition and another time they feel happiness. First respondent
openly about autistic sibling to others while the second respondent tend to avoid
questions about autistic sibling. First respondent also has a positive view about
autistic sibling with the result that she have an accurate perception of reality that
characterized by ability to set goal for autistic sibling, realize the challenge an
opportunities, and actively to attain the goal. Second respondent have been able to
set the goal about autistic sibling. The different between both of respondent
caused by the factors that influence both of respondent also differ. Social
condition and psychological factors such as learning and experienced, training,
conflict, frustration, strongly influenced the adjustment of adolescence siblings of
children with autism.
