CULTURE ANALYSIS

Train is the main transport in Japan. As tourists we pay attention to the Japanese habits in the train. During 7 days, we go around Tokyo and surrounding areas with train, the athmosphere inside the train is very quiet.

5

Activity of the people in the train are saw their handphone, read books, and speak in a low voice. Unless the railway line to Disney Sea or Disney Land (Disney Resort Line). The atmosphere in he train is rather noisy. The athmosphere in the train is rather noisy. They talked each other. The passengers are mostly families who wants vacation together and also foreign from many countries like China, Indonesia and other countries. In Tokyo we never
saw anyone smoking while walking. Local government regulates the rules of smoking in the street. If someone is
caught smoking, that is not the place to smoke, he/she will fined. Tokyo City is also very clean. We never see rubbish lying carelessly. Although in this city is very difficult to find a trash can, but the habits of Japanese people is
always keep their own garbage in their bags or pockets.
Japanese are very obedient to the rules including queuing affairs. The queue is already becomes a japanese culture. We can see at the restaurants, at shopping center, or at cashier, they all line up orderly and no one
breaks through the queue. Even when the train stopped, they lines up in and waited until all the passengers came
out the train then they got in.
Japan is a develop country but never leaves their tradition. Although, we know Japan is also famous for its
advanced technology but they strongly uphold the culture inherited from their ancestors. That’s the reason why
little of Japanese people are fluent in English. They are very respectful of local culture and practice in their daily life.
They also really keep the trational culture that have been inherited from their ancestors. The evident, we can see
the Japanese tradition and art of Japanese performances are still exist everywhere.
Japan also famous with Harajuku style. This style usually used by a group of young people and identical to
the hit of colour / contrast colour and experimental style. Usually a group of young people who gather, hang out
and discuss with a variety of unique and interesting style.
Most Japanese religios are Shinto then Buddhism and then followed by Protestant Christian as well as
Catholic Christian and a little for the others religion.

We know that Japan is a country that has sophisticated technology especially of transportation. Japan has
shinkasen that is a bullet train that can travel 200km/ hour. This shinkanse has sprea across all of Japan from
Hokkaido to Kyushu except Okinawa.

COMPANY VISIT (SHIN-KOTO INCINERATION PLANT)
Influence exerted on the environtment by human activities has become one of the global issues. Waste
Disposal is part of such an issue. In ooder to bring a solution to the issues, it is important to reduce waste as little as
possible and promote the recycling of waste as a resource. Waste is, nonetheless, produced, which must be processed in an adequate manner.
Burning is an excellent way of processing waste and recycling energy snce combustible waste is burnt in a
hygienic manner, reducing the volume to 5% while heat generated serves to generate electricity for energy recycling. Shin-koto Incineration Plant equiooed with the sate-of-the-art air pollution preventive facilities plays an important role of processing waste produced within 23 cities in Tokyo, enjoying a much longer service life as avaluable final disposak site.

Waste Management offices in each of the 23 Cities collct and transfer waste.

1. Collection – each city sets collection days areas depending on the type of waste, and conduscts efficient operation drafting operation plans that correspond to seasonal changer and regional trends in waste amounts.
Waste processing in th r23 Cities is free of charge for household waste (excluding the disposal of waste 10 kg
per day), while large-sized waste and business-generated waste are charge.

9

2. Transfer – To ensure efficient transfer, transfer methods are determined on the type of waste (combustible,
incombustible, or large-sized).
Combustible waste is loaded onto collection vehicles (such as compaction type vehicle) on collection sites, from
which it is directly transferred to an incineration plant.
Incombustible waste is transferred to either the Chubo. Incombutible Waste Processing Center or the Keihinjima
Island. Incombustible Waste Processing Center. Since both are located on the waterfront, some Cities established
land or boat transfer stations, where waste is reloaded onto container vehicles or vessels for relayed transfer. Such
relayed transfer contributes to improved transfer efficiency, reduce traffic congestion, and alleviation of air polution due to exhaust
Large-Sized waste is delivered to the Larg-Sized Waste Pulverization Processing Facility. Cities that have a transfer
station conduct relayed transfer by reloading it from smaller collection vehicles onto larger vehicles. Such relayed
transfer contributes to improved transfer efficiency, reduced traffic congestion, and alleviation of air pollution due

to exhaust.

Processing Combustible Waste
Combustible waste is incinerated at 19 incineration plants (as of December 2016) in a safe, stable, and efficient
manner. Incineration prevents bacteria, vermn and foul odor, and maintains a sanitary environment. By incinerating waste, its volume is reduced to approximately one-twentieth. By recycling a part of bottom ash in to cement
materials, and by melting it into slag, the amount going to the landfill is further reduced.

Major Facilities in an Incineration plant (Stoker Furnace)
1.

Waste Truck Scale – Measure the weight of waste

2.

Platform – waste collection vehicles dump waste into the bunker

3.

Waste bunker – waste is temporarily stored here until incineration

4.

Waste Crane – Waste is mixed, leveled and sent to the incinerator

5.

Forced Draft Fan – Air is sent from the waste bunker to the incinerator

6.

Incinerator – Burns waste at a high temperature of over 800°C (1,472°F)

7.

Boiler – Produce steam from heat geerated when waste is burned, to be used for heat supply and electric
power generation,

8.

Coolong Tower – Cools high-temperatured exhaust emitted from the incinerator to around 150°C

9.

Bag Filter – Removes soot and dust, dioxins, mercury, hydrogen chlorides and sulfur oexides from exhaust.

10. Gas Scrubber – Exhaust is cleaned with water and chemicals, for removing mercury, hydrogem chlorides and
sulfur oxides
11. Catalyst Reaction Tower – Decomposes dioxins and nitrogen oxides in exhaust using catalysts.
12. Induced Draft Fan – Exhaust is sent to the stack

10

13. Stack – Exhaust that is free of hazardous substances or odor is released into the air.
14. Wastewater Treatment Facilities – Solids and heavy metals in wastewater produced from the incineration
plant are removed to the limit or below, before wastewater is released into the sewer.
15. Central Control Room – Controls and monitors facilities including the waste bunker and the incineratr. Each
facility continuously sends information to the control computer system, and operations across the entire incineration plant can be observed on the monitors.
