ABSTRACT

To achieve high compression ratio, a method called Block Matching Motion
Estimation is widely used in various coding standards. Many previous fast block
matching algorithms have been proposed and developed in this method. In block
matching motion estimation, search patterns with different shapes or sizes and the
center-biased characteristics of motion-vector distribution have a large impact on the
searching speed and quality of performance. One ofthe algorithm, which is proposed
for the implementation in this project, is calJed Cross Diamond Search Algorithm.
The performance of this algorithm will be compared to other common algorithms in
terms of PSNR, number of search points required and computational complexity.

ABSTRAK

Terdapat berbagai jenis cara yang digunakan untuk mencapai nisbah

mampatan yang tinggi. Salah satu cara tersebut ialah block matching motion

estimation. Melalui cara ini juga berbagai block matching algoritma yang
diperkenalkan. Di dalam block matching estimation, bentuk atau saiz yang berbeza
bagi search patterns dan center-biased characteristics of motion-vector distribution
mempunyai kesan yang besar ke atas kelajuan sesuatu pencarian dan kualiti
perlaksanaan. Algoritma yang akan diperkenalkan di sini ialah Cross Diamond

Search. Setelah pelaksanaan algoritma ini berjaya dilakukan, ia akan dibandingkan
dengan algoritma yang lain dalam konteks PSNR, bilangan search point yang
diperlukan dan computational complexity.
