showcase how IBM supports its employees – by creating and
nurturing an environment that fosters trust, courage,
experimentation, well-being and mindfulness. IBM believes
that mindful employees and leaders are individually and
collectively more creative and innovative, better problem

solvers, decision makers and overall better Thinkers.

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS
TO BE

ACCOMPLISHMENTBASED
ISPI pioneers focused
performance improvement on
the valuable products of
behavior, called
accomplishments, rather than on
behavior itself. This session
examines the impact of this
paradigm shift on all phases of performance improvement. It
illustrates the power of this approach with examples, including
an accomplishment-based educational model presented by
Joe Harless, in his recently re-published book, The Eden
Conspiracy. Nearly 20 years of implementation show the farreaching technical and cultural implications of
accomplishment-based educational design.

HOLLIDAY
CULTIVATING
EXCELLENCE: VITAL (AND
USEFUL!) LESSONS

FROM NATURE ABOUT
PERFORMANCE
IMPROVEMENT
It’s easy to complain about
increasing complexity and rapid
change in the organizations we’re
helping. But nature deals with
those conditions all the time, with
elegance and ease. So what
lessons can we learn from living
systems like ant colonies, rain
forests and our bodies? It turns out: plenty. In contrast to the
traditional view of organizations as machines, we’re

increasingly recognizing them as dynamic, living ecosystems.
With this understanding, we see that we can be more e!ective
not as conductors but as cultivators of change, creating the
fertile conditions for dramatically improved performance to
emerge naturally and to be sustained over time. Through a
small amount of science and plenty of client stories, Michelle

Holliday will share what she’s learned over the past 15 years
working with a view of organizations as living systems. You’ll
leave with a good dose of inspiration, as well as a clear
understanding of how these insights can help you in your own
performance improvement work.

THE SECRET TO HIGHPERFORMING TEAMS
Through a series of riveting sea
stories, conference participants
will gain a deeper understanding
of how performance thinking
drives the highly-successful
organizational model that is the
United States Coast Guard. Learn
how a sense of IDENTITY,
PURPOSE, and EMPOWERMENT
are the keys to any successful
organizational e!ort. These are proven leadership techniques
applicable to any operating environment. You want better
results? Learn from this former ship captain how to build (and
lead) better teams, and hear Captain Diaz tell his personal
story of leading his team in the largest drug-bust in maritime
history.

THE ROLE OF
TECHNOLOGY
The human world evolves and
progresses by applying
knowledge derived from
observations, events, and
phenomena of nature. Our
evolution (as a person, company,
corporation, state, or world)
depends on our perceptions and
understanding the technologies
available.
We use our knowledge with an
aim to make improvements in the

way we want. Wildlife proves to adapt to the change caused
by internal and external interventions or events, while our
systems – on the contrary – decline and degrade.
The key for our progress lies in areas of human activity such as
computer science, mathematics, philosophy, education,

linguistics, industries is technology and proper use of
technology.
