CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the writer presents background of the study, limitation of
the study, problem statement, objective of the study, significant of the study and
research paper organization.
A. Background of the Study
Language is a communication tool used by most people in the world.
Now the variety of language in communication can increase their knowledge.
English is one of the languages that becomes the international language. English
is also dominant in some fields, such as in education. In the globalization era,
besides English in terms of education as the language use for subject, it can also
be used to socialize with a lot of people in the daily life.In current education,
English became one of subjects taught to students. Although it does not obligate
them to master English, but English is introduced early on. It can be useful when
they choose overseas schools or in major related to English.
Since English is a foreign language, it is difficult to learn English
because English atmosphere as habit or natural approach is so far away. It makes
students as the learners feel English as a new language for them. Although
English is a foreign language, it is very important to be mastered because it is an
international language. English is a foreign language which is developed in
Indonesia as a subject in school. Most of Indonesian students consider that it is
difficult and confusing lesson. It is caused by the difference between Indonesian
structure and English structure. There are four important skills if people want to
master English, namely listening, writing, speaking, and reading skill.
There are many strategies that can make English teaching and learning
process becomes communicative but none is the best. Therefore a teacher must
try to find out the appropriate strategies to teach his or her students because the
teacher has a very important role in the teaching and learning process. The
strategiesshould use creative language arts, such as song, essay, writing diary,

using picture and so on. Structure is one of linguistic aspects which students
should learn, even though the students may find difficulties in learning and
mastering English writing skill. It is important to be learned because it permeates
all language skill.
Writing is way to express the idea through writing. The general teaching
writing has been taught since students are in kindergarten, but they start learning
to write in English while they are in Junior High School and what they also have
started to write structured in accordance with the rules of grammar and tenses. So
in learning English with writing, students can develop their ideas with other
languages, except Indonesian language.
Although English is a foreign language to them because there is also
appropriate grammar and tenses of the writing in English, they can learn in many
different ways that can make them interested in learning to write in the English
language.
Recount text is one of the genre texts that aim to retell the experience
that has been done in the past. The experience can be a pleasant experience, sad
experience, scary experience or other that functions to entertain the readers.
Generally this text relates the personal experiences in the past. In
writing this text, there is a generic structure in recount text. First, orientation, in
here students tell who was the subject in the story, where is the scene of the story,
and when the story have been done. Second, events, in the events the students tell
about chronological sequence of events or occurrences that are there in the story.
And the third, re-orientation, in here students tell about the conclusion of the
story, as well as message and impression to the readers.
SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta is one of school that located in Jl. R.
Moh.

Banjarsari,
Surakarta.
Generally,
SMA
Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta had the learning aims, namely:

Carry out teaching and learning activities guidance effectively.
2.
Increase a spirit of excellence intensively to all members of the school.
3.
Encourage and assist each student to identify their potential, so they can be
developed in optimal and achievers.

Encourage the spirit of deepening Islamic religion and the implementation
in everyday.
5.
Create discipline and unity of the entire members of the school comunity.
While, learning English in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta is already
well. The teachers give direction to students to think creatively, fast, and
responsive in learning English in the classroom. In addition to using the book as
a media in learning, teachers also allow students to access the internet to
increase their knowledge. Because, basically English is a foreign language in our
environment, then students need tools to make it easier to learn them in order to
be able to follow and understand the learning English well.
At the beginning of a learning English, teacher explains the material
refers to the book as well as by giving some examples of material that can be
understood by students. After that, the teacher gives time to students for
searching additional material on the internet that are accompanied by examples.
In addition to oversee the students in learning, the teacher also provides an
opportunity for students to ask about things that are not yet understood. After the
students are able to understand the material, the teacher gives some questions to
be carried out by students; it can be taken from a book or a material made by the
teacher.
For learning in the writing of recount text, first the teacher gives the
notion of recount text, it is one of genre of the text which describes the
experience of the past either happy or sad. In writing this recount text, teachers
provided knowledge on students about the generic structure contained in the text.
Starting from the orientation which contains of who, when, where, and the
second is events which contains about all the events exist in the text, and the last
one is reorientation that contains the conclusions or the impression of a message
on the author to the reader. Recount texts use the tenses past tense because it
happened in the past.
After the teacher gives a description of the text, and then the teachers
provide opportunities for students to search other information over the internet,
and after that the students are given the assignment to write a recount text. In the

process of writing this, the teacher guides the students to be able to produce a
good text.
In here the writer focuses on writing skill especially in recount text. It
has occupied a place in most English language course. People need to learn
writing in English actually for academic and occupational purposes. To write
well, learners should know how to organize idea, construct the sentences and
arrange the sentences into coherent paragraphs. Beside that language is difficult,
if the vocabulary which the student use is less, so they must study hard to
understandthat they write. Reading is included in writing skill, if we read more
we can write more too. So the students must read everything in English to know
new vocabulary and inside their memory to write something well.
There are many causes why learning English is difficult for the students.
Learning to write is a long process. Students have to improve their grammar,
choice of words, and use right vocabularies which are difficult for them. The
learners can be stuck and cannot elaborate their idea in writing process.
The picture series is one of media that can be used by teachers in
providing learning materials to students. The picture series can be used one of
them is to write recount text. It is expected to use a series of images of students
may be interested in following the lesson and easy to express ideas that they
have.
Based on the explanation above, the researcher will conduct a research
entitled “THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PICTURE SERIES IN
TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT TO THE TENTH GRADE
STUDENTS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 SURAKARTA IN 2015/2016
ACADEMIC YEAR”
B. Limitation of the Study
In this study, the writer limits her research of the effectiveness of using
picture series in teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students of SMA
Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in 2015/2016 academic year as follows:

1. The subject of the study is limited to the tenth grade students of SMA
Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in 2015/2016 academic year.
2. The object of the study is limited to the method of picture series in teaching
writing recount text implementation on tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah
1 Surakarta in 2015/2016 academic year.
The limitation is conducted with a reason of time efficiently, effort,
energy, and get the maximum results. Because using the picture series in the
writing of the recount text is expected to increase students’ creativity to master
vocabulary and facilitate students in writing the sentence helped by picture. In
addition, the writer has reason why choosing SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta
as a place to conduct the research about using picture series in teaching writing
recount text because after the writer observed the teaching learning process in
this school, the writer found that the teacher always uses power point as a media
in teaching Engish, so it can make the students bored to follow the learning
process.
C. Problem Statement
In this research the writer formulates the specific question when the
writer conducted this research about the effectiveness of picture series in teaching
writing recount text to the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1
Surakarta in 2015/2016 academic year. The problems statements are as follows:
1. How is the implementation of the teaching writing recount text using picture
series for tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in the
academic year of 2015/2016?
2. How is the effectiveness of using picture series in teaching writing recount
text for tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta?
3. What are the strengths and weaknessesof usingpicture series teaching writng
recount text for tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakata?

D. Objective of Study
Based on the problems statement, the writer intends :
1. To know the implementation of the teaching writing recount text using
picture series for tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in
the academic year of 2015/2016.
2. To describe the effectiveness of teaching writing recount text using picture
series for tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in the
academic year of 2015/2016.
3. To identify the strength and weakness the effectiveness of teaching writing
recount text using picture series for tenth grade students of SMA
Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in the academic year of 2015/2016.
E. Significance of Study
1. Theoretically
The result of this research can be expected to know the strategies in use
picture series can be effective in teaching writing recount text.
2. Practically
a. Teacher
1) Teachers can use the material easy and they will have a new method
for teaching writing using the picture series as a media student
learning English.
2) The teachers make this method to be an interesting method in other
the students easy to understand in learning English writing.
b. Students
1) The students can be easy to understand about how to write something.
2) It can develop the student’s ability in writing skill.
c. The result of the study can be used for other researchers as the references
when they want to conduct a research about teaching writing.

F. Research Paper Organization
The writer organizes this research paper in order to make it easier
to understand. It is as follows :
Chapter I is introduction. It involves background of the study,
limitation of study, problem statement, objective of the study, significance of
study, and research paper organization.
Chapter II is review of related literature. It deals with previous
study, teaching English, teaching writing, teaching writing based on genre,
and teaching method.
Chapter III is research method. It presents type of the research,
setting of the research, research subject, research object, data and data source,
method of collecting data, data validity, and technique for analyzing data.
Chapter IV is research finding and discussion. The research finding
is elaborated into the effectiveness of picture series in teaching writing
recount text to the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta
in 2015/2016 academic year.
Chapter V deals with conclusion and suggestion.
