ABSTRACT
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INDEPENDENT TASK
IN READING COMPREHENSIONAT THE FIRST YEAR OF SMA N 1 NATAR
By
ASTY SETYOWATI
Reading is important skill for the students to prepare in their education and their future
life. In order to achieve the best result of learning a reading text, comprehension should
be taught intensively and extensively. Independent task is one of the ways in teaching
reading comprehension that is considered good to implement to help the students
understand reading texts, especially for the students of senior high school.
The aims of the research are: (1) to know the implementation of independent task in
reading comprehension at the first year students of senior high school, (2) to reveal the
students’ and the teacher’s problems in the implementation of independent task. The
research was conducted at the first year students of SMAN 1 Natar involving the
students of class X. 9. The qualitative descriptive research was applied in this research,
where the writer described the process of the implementation of independent task in
reading comprehension class.
The data were collected by using three instruments: classroom observation note,
questionnaire on the students and interview to the teacher. From the result of the
research, the writer found that process of teaching reading comprehension by using
independent task gave many advantages for the students and the teacher. After applying
the independent task in teaching reading comprehension the students got better abilities
in reading comprehension text. While the problem faced by the teacher in the process of
implementing this task are the class level and situation, finding the appropriate material
and time management.
Having observed the process of teaching-learning reading comprehension by using
independent task, it is suggested that the teacher will be able as alternately apply
Independent Task in teaching reading comprehension and broad up their way of thinking
in all the factors that influenced the success of the process in reading comprehension by
implementing Independent Task. By practicing all, the students are trained to think
creatively and bravely.
