ABSTRAK
Film sebagai media komunikasi massa yang bersifat audio dan visual mampu mengkonstruksi
dan menyajikan kembali suatu realitas serta berbagai fenomena melalui tandatanda dan semua
struktur yang membangun sebuah film. Fenomena tentang Lesbian maupun Transeksual selalu
menarik untuk di teliti dan dipelajari. Film Boys Don’t Cry merupakan salah satu film yang salah
satu bagian didalamnya menceritakan tentang cinta Lesbian dan konfliknya serta optimismenya
dalam hidupnya. Krisis identitas Lesbian yang akhirnya digolongkan menjadi Transeksual dalam
tokoh utama film ini serta banyaknya sorotan media dewasa ini tentang Lesbian dan Transeksual
tidak hanya menjadi subjek, namun juga sebagai objek komoditi atau marjinalisasi Lesbian serta
Transeksual dalam film, membuat peneliti tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian ini. Penelitian ini
berupaya untuk mengetahui krisis identitas seorang Lesbian dimaknai melalui tandatanda dalam
film Boys Don’t Cry.
Penelitian ini berorientasi pada komunkasi sebagai produksi dan pembangkitan makna.
Pencarian makna pada film harus menggunakan metode yang tepat, yang nantinya akan
membantu peneliti mengungkap makna yang tersembunyi di balik tandatanda dalam sebuah
film. Karena film dikonstruksi oleh tandatanda, maka pemaknaan ini dirasa tepat dengan
menggunakan metode semiotik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode semiotik Roland Barthes
karena peta tanda Roland Barthes mengenai tanda konotatif dan denotatif juga mitos sebagai
modus pertandaan, dirasa lengkap dan tepat untuk meneliti audio visual dalam film Boys Don’t
Cry. Proses pemaknaan pada tanda melalui tanda konotatif dan denotatif sebagai proses semiosis.
Analisis tanda nantinya akan mengarah pada pembuktian bahwa setiap tanda ditentukan oleh
bagaimana subJek dan obJek bisa dimaknai secara bersamaan dan memberikan kesan atau pesan.
Menggunakan metode semiotik dalam penelitian pada dasarnya adalah sebuah metodologi
kualitatifintrepetatif. Dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui representasi krisis identitas Lesbian,
maka plotplot yang dipilih adalah yang memunculkan tandatanda yang mengandung krisis
identitas Lesbian. Pemaknaan dua elemen penting dalam film, yaitu audio (meliputi
dialog/monolog/voice over, ilustrasi musik,sound effect) dan visual (meliputi teknik
pengambilan gambar,lighting, visualisasi, warna) akan dijadikan sebagai unit analisis data.
Sementara data diperoleh dengan teknik dokumentasi dari VCD film Bos Don’t Cry dan sumber
data lainnya yang berhubungan dengan penelitian. Proses semiosis dalam teknik analisis data
disajikan berupa peta tanda Roland Barthes.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa krisis identitas Lesbian yang dikonstruksikan dalam
film Boys Don’t Cry ditampilkan melalui representasi tokoh utama yaitu Teena Brandon. Kriris
identitas lesbian dalam film Boys Don’t Cry dikonstruksikan secara dinamis melalui dua struktur
yang membentuk film yaitu audio dan visual. Sedangkan makna krisis identitas lesbian,
diidentifikasikan menjadi tiga, yaitu merujuk pada identifikasi melalui elemen konsep diri yaitu
proses pengembangan kesadaran diri. Proses pengembangan kesadaran diri diperoleh melalui
tiga cara, yaitu cermin diri, pribadi sosial dan perwujudan diri. Tokoh Brandon
mempressentasikan cermin diri sebagai sikap optimis tentang krisis identitasnya. Dimana ia
menjadi subyek dan objek dimana ia merupakan subyek sebagai pelaku utama dan obyek
pengembangan dirinya. Pribadi sosial ditampilkan melalui penolakan, hinaan, permaluan,
pemerkosaan, pukulan serta pembunuhan yang di alami Brandon oleh Tom dan John. Yaitu juga
diperlihatkan relasinya kepada Lana yang mencintainya apa adanya serta Candance, ibu Lana.
Perwujudan diri Brandon ditampilkan dari keseharian yang dilakukan Brandon. Perwujudan diri
ini bukan terjadi secara drastis, namun karena kebiasaan seseorang.

build a movie. The phenomenon of the Lesbian and Transsexual always interesting for the
thorough and studied. The film Boys Do not Cry is one of the film in which one part in it tells the
story of lesbian love and conflict, and optimism in life. Lesbian identity crisis that ultimately
classified into transsexual in this movie the main character and the great media attention these
days about the Lesbian and Transsexual not only the subject, but also as an object of commodity
or marginalization of lesbian and transsexual in the film, making researchers interested in
conducting this research. This study seeks to determine the identity crisis of a Lesbian
interpreted through signs in the movie Boys Do not Cry.

researchers uncover the hidden meaning behind the signs in a movie. Because the film is
constructed by the signs, then the meaning is deemed appropriate by using semiotic methods.

connotative and denotative also a myth as pertandaan mode, full deemed appropriate to examine
audio and visual in the film Boys Do not Cry. The process of meaning in the sign through
connotative and denotative sign as a process of semiosis. Analysis of the sign would lead to
proving that every sign is determined by how the subject and object can be interpreted
simultaneously and give the impression and message.
