CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

In communicating, people need language as one the media to convey their message. To communicate with someone, people have select appropriate words to build good sentence. Like other language English has grammar rule to build good correct sentences. Grammar is needed because without it people can not create correct sentences even though they understand what we can say. Many people make unnecessary mistakes I using the tenses correctly in both speaking and writing simply because they can not pay attention the grammar rules of tenses, when speaking or writing a person generally uses several different tenses and moves from one tense to the other correctly and quickly. As you review the tense, and remember the following:

• Grammar is a theory of language, of how language is put together and how it works.

• Grammar rules do not tell you what to say, it tells you how to say something correctly. Real-life events and your feeling about these events will determine.

• Certain verb can not be used in certain tense because of the meaning of the verb. You must often think about the meaning of particular tense.

CHAPTER III

A DESCRIPTION OF FUTURE TENSE AND FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

3.1. Definition of future Tense

There are some definition of simple future tense which are stated by the experts as follow:

• The simple future tense is a verb form that the event described by the verb as not having happened yet, but expected to happen in the future (in absolute tense system), or to happen subsequent to some other event, whether that is past, present, or future ( in relative tense system)

• The simple future tense is a tense, which is show the actions , event, activation or work when we want make plain.

• The simple future has two different forms in English: “will” and “be going”. Although the two forms can sometimes be used in interchangeably, they often express two very different meaning. These different meaning might seem too abstract at first, but with time and practice, the different will become clear. Both “will and “be going to” refer to a specific time in the future.

Example for “will”:- you will help me later.

(23)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009. • The simple future is often called will, because we make the simple future

tense with the modal auxiliary will.

• The simple future cannot be used in clauses beginning with time expressions such as: when, while, before, after, by time, as soon as, if, unless, etc.Instead of Simple future, Simple Present is used.

3.1.1. Form

Before I explain about the simple future tense, we have to know some rules for simple future tense first is given in the following section:

a. The Formula of Simple Future Tense

- Affirmative Statement : S + WILL / SHALL + VERB1

For example :

{I- you-she-he-it-we-they} will finish at 9:00. will study tonight. will come tomorrow.

- Negative statement : S + WILL / SHALL + NOT + VERB1

For Example

{I-you-she-he-it-we-they} will not finish at 9:00. will not study tonight. will not come tomorrow.

(24)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

- Interrogative : WILL / SHALL + S + VERB1

For Example

{WILL-I-you-she-he-it-we-they} Study English tonight.

Come tomorrow to bring your card.

Be working at noon in my office.

- Short Answer : Yes, No + S + Will.

Yes, {I-you-she-he-it-they-we} will

No, {I-you-she-he-it-we-they} will

b. Adverb of Time in Using Simple future tense

- Tomorrow

- Tomorrow morning

- The day after tomorrow - Tonight

- Next month

- Next year

- Next

(25)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

- This afternoon - If

- Later

- Every

The simple future tense expresses future intentions. In some cases, will and going to are interchangeable. However, will is normally used to express predictions, requests, offers, and promises. In spoken English, the short form of will ( I’ll) and will not (won’t) are common.

For example :

Intentions : I’ll work much hander this semester, Mom. Predictions : By studying more, I’ll get better grades.

Request : Will you help me with my work?

Offers : I’ll find some books for you. Promises : I’ll help you on Saturday.

To form the simple future for both regular and irregular verb, place the modal auxiliary verb will before the base form of the verb.

For example:

Singular Plural

First Person I will study we will study

Second Person you will go you will go

(26)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

3.1.2. Function

There are some function of simple future tense, they are:

 To expresses the speaker’s opinions, assumption, speculation about the future. These may be introduces by verb such as assume, be afraid, be sure, believe, daresay, doubt, expect, hope, know, etc. For example

- (I’ll sure) he’ll come back

 The simple future tense can be used with or without a time

expression.

 The simple future tense is used similar for future habitual action which we assume will take place.

For example:

 The future simple tense is used in sentences containing clause of condition, time, and sometimes purpose.

For example:

(27)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

Note that in an if-clause or time clause we don’t use the future simple event when the meaning is future.

 Verb not normally used in the continuous tenses, e.g. auxiliary verb, verb of tense, of emotion, thinking, possessing etc.

 The simple future tense is used to express a voluntary action.

The simple future tense is often called will, because we make the simple future tense the modal auxiliary will.

 In the simple future tense “will and “ be going to” can express the idea of a general prediction about the future. Prediction are guesses about what might happen in the future.

 When you referring to future action, state, or event, use the simple future tense.

For example:

Future Action : we take our final exam on Friday. Future State : they will be late.

(28)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

Future Event : The weather will improve.

 We often the simple future to make a prediction about the future. Again, there is no firm plan. We are saying what we think will

happen. Here are some example:

- It will rain tomorrow.

- Who do you think will get the job?

We often use the simple future tense with to think before it: For example:

- I think I will have a holiday next year. -I don’t think I’ll buy that car.

When the main verb is be, we can use the simple future tense event if we have a firm plan decision before speaking.

For example:

-I‘ll be in Jakarta.

-I’m going shopping. I won’t be very long.

3.2. Definition of Simple Future Continuous tense

The simple future continuous tense also has some definition according to some experts, as follow:

• The future continuous normally describes actions that will be in progress in the future, this mean that they will begin before, and perhaps continue after, a specific time in future. Specific time expressions such as at 10:00(noon), at that time, at this time

(29)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

tomorrow (next week), the day after tomorrow, a week (month) from today often appear whit this tense.

• The simple future tenses has two different form ”will be doing” and “be going to do be going”. Unlike Simple future tense forms, future continuous forms are usually interchangeable.

• The simple future continuous tense cannot be used in clauses beginning with time expressions such as: when, while, before, after, by time, as soon, if, unless, etc. instead of Future Continuous tense, Present Continuous Tense is used.

• The simple future continuous tense is present continuous tense recycled. It is often used to ask about and discuss future arrangements or plan with just the addition of a future time, but you only use it when these arrangements are certain.

• The simple future continuous tense is also used to talk about and make future appointments and arrangements using the words go or come.

b. Adverb of the Simple Future Continuous Tense

- for……by…

3.2.2. Function

There is some function of simple future continuous tense, they are:

 The simple future continuous tense used to indicate that a longer action in the future will be interrupted by a shorter action in the future. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption.

For example:

- I will be watching TV when she arrives tonight. - I will be waiting for you when your bus arrives.

 When you use the simple future continuous tense with two action in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions will be happened at the same time.

For example:

(32)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

- Tonight, they will be eating dinner, discussing, their plains, and having a good time.

 In English, we often use a series of Parallel Action to describe atmosphere at a specific point in the future.

For example:

- When I arrive at the party, everybody is going to be celebrating.

- Some will be dancing. Other are going to be talking. A few people

- Will be eating pizza, and several people are going to be drinking beer. They always do the same thing.

 The different between ”will” to state desire and “will” used with the future continuous tense.

- “Will be” is used with the future continuous tense. - “Will” used without “be” is used to state desire.

- “Will”can also be used with the present continuous tense to state an unplanned event or action. when “ will” is used with the present continuous tense “will” is followed by the verb-ing.

 The use of “ will be doing” in a sentence is often referred to as the future continuous. When you use the simple future continuous tense with two action in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions will be happened at the same time.

For example:

- Next week we will be having a party. Can you coma? - We will be leaving here at 10:00.

 The simple future continuous verb tense used 3 kinds of verb, 2 auxiliary verb, and 1 main verb.

- In English, the auxiliary verb “ to be” does not change to the subject.

- The auxiliary verb “will” always stays in the base form. - The –ing is added to the main verb is added to the end of

(34)

Ermila Sari Sikumbang : A Brief Description Of Simple Future Tense And Future Continuous Tense, 2009.

 In the simple future continuous, a specific time is used to interrupts the action. In the simple future tense, a specific time is used to show the time an action will begin or end.

 The simple future continuous tense used as an ordinary continuous tense.

 It can express a future without intention.

 The simple future continuous cannot be used in clause beginning with time expressions such as: while, when, before, after, by the time, as soon as, if, unless, etc. instead of simple future continuous, Present Continuous is used.

For example:

-while I am going to be finishing my homework, she is going to Make dinner. (not correct)
