CHARACTERISTICS OF EYE DISEASES IN CHILDREN THAT CAUSE BLINDNESS IN CICENDO EYE HOSPITAL PERIOD 2009.
ABSTRACT
A descriptive retrospective study was conducted on December 2010 until
April 2011 in Cicendo Eye Hospital, Bandung to know the characteristics of eye
diseases in children that cause blindness in Pediatric Polyclinic of Opthalmology
Department of Cicendo Eye Hospital. The study involved blind children aged
from 0 until 14 years old. The data was collected from the medical record year
2009 from January until December. The characteristics chosen were the results of
the diagnosis, age and sex of the blind children. The data was analyzed based on
the physiology visual acuity test that had been conducted to the patients. WHO
defines blindness as a corrected visual acuity in the better eye of less than 3/60.
From the findings, there are 78 cases of blindness which is 1.2% and 6320
cases of non-blind which is 98.8% of children patients were recorded on year
2009. The major source of blindness was the disease of lens with 35 cases
(44.9%), which is cataract development with 21 cases (26.9%) and congenital
cataract with (18.0%). Boys have higher frequency of getting blind compared to
girls, with 3:1 ratio. From 78 cases reported, 33 cases came from age group 6-9
years old, a school-aged child which was the highest frequency of age group.
