TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS TOWARD THE USE OF VIDEO
Teachers’ Perceptions Toward the Use of Video Multimedia in Teaching
Risviska Yeyen
Abstract
Education system in Indonesia is now heading towards a more advanced technology.
Many schools are implementing video multimedia as a teaching method. As Stempleski
(1998) notes that video-based lessons can highly stimulate and provide rich resources for
language learning, thus, many private schools uses video multimedia in several lessons
including English. Video multimedia can help teachers to motivate students in learning
and offers a different mode of presentation. According to Mackey and Ho as cited in Choi
and Johnson (2005), video learning is an effective way of providing motivation, keeping
attention, and giving satisfaction to the learner. The present study investigated the
teachers’ perception toward the use of video multimedia in teaching English. The
participants consisted of three English teachers in one of private school in Salatiga who
have taught English subject using video multimedia. The data was collected from semistructured interview, in which all of the participants were individually interviewed about
their perceptions towards the use of video in teaching. This study found that the
participants had mentioned three positive responses towards video multimedia, for
instance video as a tool to encourage students’ interaction, motivational tool, and to help
students’ long term memory. At the end of the discussion there were obstacles that teacher
faced. First is difficulties in finding a suitable video for teaching. The second is learning
process and the availability of tool. Therefore, this finding suggested that school can also
support the use of video in teahcing by providing necessary tools.
Key words: perception, video multimedia, picture, and audio-visual.
