Keyword: Spelling Bee Game as a Technique to Teach Vocabulary
One of the parts in creating and understanding English is vocabulary
mastery. It is basic components of English language which must be mastered by
students in order to make them be able in practicing and applying English.
Without mastering vocabulary people cannot express their opinion and ideas. In
fact, when the writer observed, the writer found that some of the students at SDN
3 Bandengan Jepara were not good at vocabulary and also the student’s did not
understand the content when the teacher speaks. The technique used by the
teacher that is drilling. It is the reason, why the writer used Game as a technique.
This Game is called Spelling Bee. Spelling Bee is a kind of competition where the
competitors have to compete to spell words given correctly. In this research,
Spelling Bee Game is an activity played by individual or team students to spell the
word on picture. Spelling Bee Game is a game that combines “spelling bee”
competition with the use of picture as media and jumbled words. Spelling Bee
Game helps students review the vocabulary, spell the vocabulary and the meaning
vocabulary. So the students enable to find or to enrich the vocabulary.
The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is any significant
difference between the vocabulary mastery of fourth graders of elementary school
before and after being taught by using Spelling Bee Game technique.
This research is an experimental research that is quasi experiment

research. Subject of the research used is the fourth graders at SDN 3 Bandengan
Jepara in the academic year of 2015/2016. The subject of this research contains 27
students; 14 males and 13 females. The writer used a test as instrument of the
research. The form of the test is multiple-choice questions (MCQs), fill in the
blank and matching. It consists of 30 questions.
The result of this research shows that there is any significant difference
between the vocabulary mastery of fourth graders of elementary school before and
after being taught by using Spelling Bee Game technique.
After knowing the result of this research that the Vocabulary mastery of
the fourth graders of elementary school after being taught by using Spelling Bee
Game technique is higher than before being taught by using Spelling Bee Game
technique. Thus, the writer suggests that the teacher should be able to create in
teaching learning process more interesting, innovative, and enjoyable. The teacher
can use Spelling Bee Game in teaching vocabulary mastery.

Salah satu bagian dalam menciptakan dan memahami bahasa Inggris
adalah kemampuan kosakata. Ini adalah komponen dasar dari bahasa Inggris yang
harus dikuasai oleh siswa agar mereka dapat berlatih dan menerapkan bahasa
Inggris. Tanpa menguasai kosa kata orang tidak dapat mengungkapkan pendapat
dan ide-ide mereka. Bahkan, ketika penulis mengamati, penulis menemukan
beberapa siswa di SDN 3 Bandengan Jepara yang kurang baik dalam kosakata dan
siswa juga kurang paham ketika guru berbicara. Teknik yang digunakan oleh guru
yaitu teknik drilling. Ini adalah alasan, mengapa penulis menggunakan permainan
sebagai teknik. Permainan ini disebut Spelling Bee. Spelling Bee adalah semacam
kompetisi di mana pesaing harus bersaing untuk mengeja kata-kata yang diberikan
dengan benar. Dalam penelitian ini, permainan Spelling Bee adalah kegiatan yang
dimainkan oleh siswa baik individu atau tim untuk mengeja kata sesuai gambar.
Permainan Spelling Bee adalah permainan yang menggabungkan kompetisi
"spelling bee" dengan penggunaan gambar sebagai media dan kata-kata acak.

Permainan Spelling Bee membantu siswa meninjau kosakata, mengeja kosakata
dan makna kosakata. Sehingga siswa memungkinkan untuk menemukan atau
untuk memperkaya kosa kata.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan
yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas IV sekolah dasar sebelum
dan setelah diajar dengan menggunakan teknik Permainan Spelling Bee .
Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental yaitu penelitian
eksperimen kuasi . Subjek penelitian yang digunakan adalah siswa kelas empat di
SDN 3 Bandengan Jepara Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 . Subjek penelitian ini berisi
27 siswa ; 14 laki-laki dan 13 perempuan . Penulis menggunakan tes sebagai
instrumen penelitian . Bentuk tes ini adalah pilihan ganda ( MCQs ) , mengisi
kosong dan pencocokan . Ini terdiri dari 30 soal.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan
antara penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas IV sekolah dasar diajarkan sebelum dan
setelah menggunakan teknik permainan Spelling Bee.
Setelah mengetahui hasil penelitian ini bahwa penguasaan kosa kata dari
siswa kelas empat sekolah dasar setelah diajar dengan menggunakan teknik
permainan Spelling Bee lebih tinggi daripada sebelum menggunakan teknik
permainan Spelling Bee. Dengan demikian, penulis menyarankan bahwa guru

harus menciptakan suasana mengajar yang lebih menarik, inofatif, dan
menyenangkan dalam proses pembelajaran. Guru dapat menggunakan permainan
Spelling Bee dalam pengajaran kemampuan kosakata.
