A
SOCIOLOGICAL
APPROACH.
RESEARCH
PAPER.
MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SURAKARTA. 2012.
The objective of the study is to analyze the play based on its structural
analysis and based on sociological analysis. This study is descriptive study. The
object of the study is Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband played for the first time in
London in 1895 in London.
The data sources are divided into two, namely primary data source and
secondary data source. The primary is the play itself and secondary data source is
other sources relating to the analysis such as author biography, books of literary
theory and also sociological books. The method of data collection is literary
research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis
The conclusion of the study are as follows. First, based on the structural
analysis, it is evident that in this play, Oscar Wilde suggests the idea that in the
modern age trust is more important. In order to support the idea, Wilde built
characters such as Sir Robert Chiltern and Mrs. Cheveley who get the wealth and
power by hypocritical. Second based on the sociological analysis Wilde through
An Ideal Husband play reflects the condition of upper class in that time. Third, in
An Ideal Husband Wilde wants to criticize the life style of the English people in
