TCP
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the core protocols
of the Internet Protocol Suite. TCP was one of the two original
components, with Internet Protocol (IP), of the suite, so that the entire
suite is commonly referred to as TCP/IP. Whereas IP handles lowerlevel transmissions from computer to computer as a message makes
its way across the Internet, TCP operates at a higher level, concerned
only with the two end systems, for example, a Web browser and a Web
server. In particular, TCP provides reliable, ordered delivery of a
stream of bytes from a program on one computer to another program
on another computer. Besides the Web, other common applications of
TCP include e-mail and file transfer. Among its other management
tasks, TCP controls message size, the rate at which messages are
exchanged, and network traffic congestion

IP ADDRESS
An identifier for a computer or device on a
TCP/IP network. Networks using the
TCP/IP protocol route messages based on
the IP address of the destination. The
format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric
address written as four numbers separated
by periods. Each number can be zero to
255. For example, 1.160.10.240 could be
an IP address.
WORKGROUP / DOMAIN
A group of computers and devices on a
network that are administered as a unit with
common rules and procedures. Within the
Internet, domains are defined by the IP
address. All devices sharing a common part
of the IP address are said to be in the same
domain.

GATEWAY
DNS
(1) A node on a network that serves as an entrance to another
network. In enterprises, the gateway is the computer that routes the
traffic from a workstation to the outside network that is serving the
Web pages. In homes, the gateway is the ISP that connects the
user to the internet. In enterprises, the gateway node often acts as
a proxy server and a firewall. The gateway is also associated with
both a router, which use headers and forwarding tables to
determine where packets are sent, and a switch, which provides the
actual path for the packet in and out of the gateway.
(2) A computer system located on earth that switches data signals
and voice signals between satellites and terrestrial networks.
(3) An earlier term for router, though now obsolete in this sense as
router is commonly used.
1) Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server),
an Internet service that translates domain names into IP
addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic,
they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is
really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a
domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the
name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the
domain name www.example.com might translate to
198.105.232.4. The DNS system is, in fact, its own
network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate
a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on,
until the correct IP address is returned.
