  Key Words: Reading Comprehension and PQ4R Strategy.

  Reading is one of activities which is important to get some information from the world. Especially for the students, beside to get some information the purpose of reading is to comprehend the text. For some students, reading a text is boring so the teacher must find new strategy to improve students’ interest in reading and help the students in comprehend a text. PQ4R strategy is one of strategies which is used to help the students in comprehend a text.

  The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant difference between reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati in the academic year 2018/2019 before and after being taught by using PQ4R strategy.

  The design of this research is experimental research. The population of this research is all the eighth grade students of MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati. The sample of this research is class VIII A which consists of 23 students. The instrument of this research is multiple choice test which consists of 25 questions. To analyze the data, the writer used mean, standard deviation and hypothesis testing using t-test.

  The result of this research showed that the mean of the pre-test is 54.97 and the standard deviation is 16.96 meanwhile the mean of the post-test is 77,9 and the standard deviation is 17.4. The hypothesis testing got the t(obtained ) 11.7 in t-table ±2.074, df=22 and the level of significance

  (α) is 0.05. the writer concluded that the null hypothesis (H O ) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H a ) is accepted because the t(obtained) falls in the critical region. There is a significant difference between reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati in the academic year 2018/2019 before and after being taught by using PQ4R strategy.

  Based on the result of the research, PQ4R strategy is effective to improve the reading comprehension especially for the eighth grade students of MTs Roudlotusysyubban in the academic year 2018/2019. The writer would like to give suggestion: (1) For the students, they are suggested to apply PQ4R strategy when they read a text because it is an effective strategy to comprehend a text, (2) For the English teachers, they are suggested to apply PQ4R strategy as an alternative strategy in teaching reading comprehension, (3) For further researchers, the writer suggests the result of this strategy can be used as additional reference for further research with different sample and occasion.

  Kata Kunci: Pemahaman Membaca dan Strategi PQ4R Membaca merupakan suatu kegiatan yang sangat penting untuk mendapatkan berbagai informasi dari seluruh dunia. Khususnya untuk para siswa, selain untuk mendapatkan informasi, tujuan membaca adalah juga untuk memahami suatu teks. Bagi sebagian siswa, membaca teks adalah suatu kegiatan yang membosankan sehingga guru harus mampu mencari strategi baru untuk meningkatakan minat siswa dalam membaca dan membantu siswa dalam memahami suatu teks. Strategi PQ4R adalah salah satu strategi yang digunakan untuk membantu siswa dalam memahami teks.

  Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemehaman membaca siswa kelas delapan dari MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati pada tahun ajaran 2018/2019 sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan strategi PQ4R.

  Desain penelitian ini adalah peneltian eksperimen.Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas delapan dari MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII A dengan jumlah siswa

  23. Instrumen peneliatian ini adalah menggunakan test pilihan ganda dengan jumlah soal 25. Untuk menganalisa data, penulis menggunakan rata-rata, simpangan pokok, dan uji hipotesis menggunakan t-test.

  Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata dari pre-test adalah 54.97 dan simpangan pokok 16.96 sedangkan rata-rata dari post-test adalah 77.39 dan simpangan pokok 17,4. Untuk uji hipotesis memperoleh t(obtained) 11,7 pada tabel ±2.074, df=22 dan tingkat signifikan (α) 0.05.

  Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa null hipotesis (H ) ditolak dan alternatif

  hipotesis (H ) diterima karena t(obtained) jatuh pada critical region.Terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemehaman membaca siswa pada kelas delapan dari MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati pada tahun ajaran 2018/2019 sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan strategi PQ4R.

  Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, strategi PQ4R efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan kepemahaman membaca siswa khususnya pada kelas delapan dari MTs Roudlotusysyubban Pati pada tahun ajaran 2018/2019. Penulis ingin memberikan saran: (1) untuk para siswa, mereka disarankan untuk menerapkan strategi PQ4R ketika membaca sebuah teks karena strategi PQ4R adalah salah satu startegi yang cocok untuk memahami sebuah teks, (2) untuk guru-guru bahasa Inggris, mereka disarankan untuk menerapkan strategi PQ4R sebagai salah satu salternatif strategi untuk mengajar kepemahaman membaca, (3)untuk para peneliti selanjutnya, penulis menyarankan hasil dari strategi ini dapat digunakan sebagai referensi tambahan untuk penelitian selanjutnyadengan sampel dan pada kesempatan yang berbeda.
