CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of The Study
Language is a tool of communication. It means that human need it to interact or
communicate with others in daily life. Language plays a part in our life. The function
of language is to make communication with other people and to deliver the
information in our society. Trudgill (1983:13) states that language is not simply a
means of communicating information about the weather or any subject. It is also a
very important means of establishing and maintaining relationship with other people.
In addition, the other function of language is to maintain our relationship with
environment.
Sociolinguistics is a study of language and culture in society. Sociolinguistic is a
study of language and culture in society. Sociolinguistics related to human society,
including culture, norm, expectations, and context on the way language is used.
Trudgill (1983:32) states that sociolinguistics is part of linguistics which is concerned
with language as a social and cultural phenomenon. It investigates the field of
language and society and has close connections with the social sciences, especially
social psychology, anthropology, human geography, and sociology.
Language has an important role in society, on how to communicate with each
other. People cannot be separated with language is what the member of a particular
society use for communication. However, speech in almost any society can take
different forms, like a dialect in one region is different with another region. For

1

example the dialect between east java and central java is different. Dialect in central
java more clam than dialect in east java.
The variety of language occurs in society due to several factors such as different
social status, different profession, age and gender. According to Brown in Intan
(2011) stated that truckers, airlines pilots, salespersons, and farmer, for examples, use
words and phrases unique to their own group. In the other word, the differences of
language cause language variation. Language variation is the existence of observable
differences in the way a language is used in a speech community, Trask (1999:333).
The development of language is influenced by the society itself and creates many
kinds of language variations; they are dialect, registers, jargon, colloquial, vernacular,
accent, pidgin, argot, and slang. In this study, the writer intended to discuss one of
those language variations, that is slang.
Slang is informal and often ephemeral linguistics form, it means that slang is
short live use. Slang words characterized by a high degree of informality, familiarity,
and vocabulary richness. The member of particular social group usually introduces
the slang expressions, they may remain the property of that group and badge of group
identity or they may instead become much more widely known and used (R. L. Trask,
1999). Slang words and expressions are characterized by a high degree of informality,
familiarity, vocabulary richness. They are realized by a specific group of people
whose members are connected with some particular link, such as territory
(Californian), age(teenagers), subculture (students), and mainly occur in the spoken
form of the language.

2

According to Sanjaya (2010) in the research analyzing the slang in the movie
“The Longest Yard”, most of slang words are used in the conversation between actors
in the informal situation, such as: inmate and inmate, guard and inmate, inmate and
warden. It also happens between the guard and the warden, because slang is typical of
informal conversation, and in movie, we can find words or expressions of slang. In
this study the researcher interested in analyzing the words or the expression of slang
used in “August Rush” movie to enrich the vocabularies of slang words. The slang
expressions found in “August Rush” movie such as “Louis. She ain't coming” it
means that she is not coming, Ain’t here means not. The other example is “How many
dead presidents you got?” this meaning is “how much money you have?”
The researcher uses “August Rush” movie because the researcher finds out the
phenomenon when watching this movie. Some of slang language was inserted in the
movie especially in action movie, but in this movie as a drama movie inserted some
of American slang language to the conversation. Some of drama movie rarely used
American slangs in their conversation, but in this movie the researcher found some of
American slang. The people that mostly used American slang in “August Rush”
movie are the people from lower social class. The movie of “August Rush”, directed
by Kristen Sheridan, has the good story in telling about biological family, orphan,
street musician, adoption. This movie also won some awards such as Broadcast Film
Critics Association award on 2007 category best family film, and category best
young actor; Chicago international film festival award on 2007 category film
presented; and Hamptons International Film Festival award on 2007 category film
presented.
3

The researcher uses “August Rush” movie to help the reader to get information
and knowledge about popular American slang used in, because from the movie itself
the reader can learn some kinds of American slang words and phrase, to know the
situation when using the American slang word and phrase, and how to apply the
American slang words or phrase to communicate to others.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Based on descriptions above, the several problems are formulated as follows:
1. What are the American slang used in “August Rush” movie?
2. What are the meanings of American slang used in “August Rush” movie?
3. Which are the most dominant forms of American slang used in “August
Rush” movie?
1.3 Purposes of The Study
Based on the problems, the purposes of the study can be formulated as follows:
1. To find out the American slang used in “August Rush” movie.
2. To describe the meaning of American slang used in “August Rush” movie.
3. To know the most dominant form of American slang used in “August
Rush” movie.
1.4 Significance of The Study
The result of this study is expected to give contribution in sociolinguistics fields
especially in language varieties. For the students in English Department, hopefully
this result can enrich new vocabulary of slang found in “August Rush” movie.
The result of this study has both theoretical and practical values. Theoretically,
the writer expects that the result of this study can give contribution to the readers to
4

learn and develop their knowledge especially in using slang. Practically, this is
important for the readers, because slang is often used by people in informal situation.
We can find them through television, newspaper, books, and people’s speech.
The writer hopes that the result of this study can be used as reference for readers
who want to study and share their knowledge to others about slang. In addition, the
result of this study may be used by other researcher and will encourage them to carry
out similar studies.
1.5 Scope and Limitation of The Study
The scope of this study is American slang words and phrases that were spoken by
the character; the limitation of this study is American slang words or phrases in
“August Rush” movie.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
To avoid misunderstanding, the writer gives definition of key term used in this
study. The terms are defined as follow:

Slang is informal word expression, that popular in group to make an identity, it is
very popular and fashionable. Slang is informal and often ephemeral linguistics
form. The member of particular social group usually introduces the slang
expressions, they may remain the property of that group and badge of group
identity or they may instead become much more widely known and used (R.L.
Trask, 1999)

American slang is slang expression used in America which is like a code.
American slang being a public interest, and modernity. Anyone visiting or living

5

in America is bound to encounter a confusing yet popular “inside” language used
by the inhabitants: slang and idiom. This is an ever-changing, ever-evolving
language which is like a code that tends to segregate non-native speakers (Burke,
1997).

“August Rush” is the title of the movie. August Rush is a 2007 drama film
directed by Kirsten Sheridan.

Movie is art that people made to entertain the audience using performance and
acting. Movie is a combination of photographs projected onto a screen to create
the illusion of motion and continuity (The American Heritage Dictionary of The
English Language, 2006). Movie can be photograph, or acting that presented
onto a screen that seen by audience.
