of the Eighth grade Students of SMP Islam Darurrohman Kedung Jepara in
Academic Year 2014/2015 Taught by Using Google Translate Tool in Mobile

English Education Department in Muria Kudus University.

Key words: Vocabulary mastery and Google Translate Tool in mobile phone.
Vocabulary is a central part of a language. Vocabulary mastery is a

complete skill to understand and apply the stock of words. We cannot express our
idea without knowing English vocabulary. However, the fact shows that the
students have the limitation of vocabulary, they find some difficulties to master
vocabulary. Nowadays almost of the students have mobile phone which supported
by internet connection. Using Google Translate as media to teach English can
provide students with the information about the looked-up and quickly.
The objective of this research is to find out whether there is significant
difference between the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP
Islam Darurrohman Kedung Jepara in academic year 2014/2015 before and after
being taught by using Google Translate Tool in Mobile Phone.
This is an experimental research uses one group pretest-posttest design.
The total population in this research is 22 students. The researcher takes the whole
population as the sample of the research. The instrument used by the writer was
test to know the data before and after being taught by using Google Translate tool
in mobile phone.
The writer carried out data analysis and tested the hypothesis. The mean
for the pretest is 59.22, standard deviation is 17.79. While for the posttest got the
data mean is 70.70 with standard deviation is 5.59. For hypothesis testing got t0 =
5.54 while t-table 0.05 is 2.08. The writer concluded that there is a significant
difference of the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP Islam

Darurrohman Kedung Jepara in academic year 2014/2015 before and after being
taught by using Google Translate Tool in mobile phone.
From the fact above, The English teachers are suggested to use Google
Translate to mastering vocabulary because this is one of the appropriate media in
teaching and learning process. This is alternative media to look up the meaning
effectively. Teachers pointed out that Google Translate was essentially a
calculator for language students.

Kosa kata adalah bagian penting dari sebuah bahasa. Penguasaan kosa kata

adalah kemampuan yang lengkap untuk peamahaman dan penerapan kumpulankumpulan kata. Kita tidak bisa mengekspresikan ide kita tanpa adanya
pengetahuan tentang kosa kata bahasa Inggris. Akan tetapi, kenyataannya
menunjukkan bahwa siswa mempunyai keterbatasan pada kosa kata, mereka
menemukan kesulitan dalam penguasaan kosa kata. Sekarang ini hampir semua
siswa mempunyai telefon genggam yang didukung oleh koneksi internet.
Menggunakan Google Translate sebagai media untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris
bisa menyediakan siswa dengan informasi pencarian dengan cepat.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan adanya perbedaan
yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosa kata pada siswa kelas delapan SMP Islam
Darurrohman Kedung Jepara tahun ajaran 2014/2015 sebelum dan sesudah
mengajar dengan menggunakan alat Google Translate di telefon genggam.
Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian experimen yang menggunakan desain
satu grup pretes dan postes. Jumlah populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 22 siswa.
Peneliti mengambil dari semua populasi sebagai sample pada penelitian.
Instrument yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah tes untuk mengetahui data
sebelum dan sesudah pengajaran dengan menggunakan alat Google Translate in
telefon genggam.
Peneliti mengambil analisis data dan hipotesis tindakan. Nilai rata-rata
untuk pretest adalah 59.22, standard deviasi adalah 17.79. sementara untuk postes
didapat data nilai rata-ratanya adalah 70.70 dengan standard deviasinya dalalah

2.08. Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa ada pearbedaan yang signifikan pada
penguasaan kosa kata pada siswa kelas delapan SMP Islam Darurrohman Kedung
Jepara tahun ajaran 2014/2015 mengajar dengan menggunakan alat Google
Translate di telefon genggam.
Dari fakta diatas, guru bahasa Inggris disarankan untuk menggunakan
Google Translate untuk penguasaan kosa kata karena ini merupakan salah satu
media yang sesuai dalam prose belajar mengajar. Ini merupakan alternative media
untuk mencari arti kata yang efektif. Guru menyarankan bahwa Google Translate
adalah sebagai kalkulator untuk bahasa siswa.
