Overcoming Difficulty in Transcribing English Lecture Recordings About Classical Music.

ABSTRACT

Dalam masa magang saya, saya mendapat kesulitan dalam
menuliskan rekaman ceramah Bahasa Inggris mengenai musik klasik.
Inggris tentang musik klasik.

membaca buku berbahasa Inggris tentang musik klasik. Lalu saya

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Nowadays, English becomes more and more important for not only
daily life but also business fields, due to the fact that most of people who
work in business fields deal with English every day. According to
Trimborn, English is a global language for doing business (par. 4).
One of the business fields that use English is radio field. Maestro is
one of the radio stations that often uses English material for broadcasting.
That is one of the reasons why I choose to have an internship at Radio
Maestro. I would like to learn more about practical English in radio area.
During my internship, I had to transcribe English recordings about
classical music. The most difficult problem that I had was when I
transcribed the recordings, I could not catch some words although I had
already played the recordings many times.
Therefore, in this term paper, I am going to discuss about difficulty in
transcribing English lecture recordings about classical music which is I

cannot finish transcribing whole recording and have missing words. It is

1

because I feel that this is the most difficult part of my work during the
internship in Maestro Radio and I want to discuss more about the cause
and the effect of this difficulty. I also want to discover the best solution for
this matter so that I can learn from my mistakes and transcribe better in
the future.

B. Identification of the Problem
In this study, I would like to analyze the following matters, which are:
-

Why cannot I transcribe the recording well?

-

How should I handle the problem of transcribing the recording?

-

What is the best solution to overcome difficulty in transcribing?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
There are some objectives for this term paper. The first one is to
discover why I cannot transcribe the recording well. The second is to offer
three solutions that can be used to handle the problem of transcribing the
recording. The last one is to know the best solution to overcome difficulty
in transcribing.
There are some benefits of the study. The first one is to help me
improve my transcribing skill. Then I would like to inform the readers
about the difficulty in transcribing the recording and how to overcome the
problem so that people who have the same problem with me can use the
solution I offer.

D. Description of the Institution
Maestro Radio was established on January 4th 1969. Maestro Radio
used to be at Kacapiring 9, now it is located at Kacapiring 12. The founder
of Maestro Radio was Gito Nugroho. He liked electronics, and he learned
about the principles of sound amplifier and transmitting set then tried to
develop his own little simple transmitting set in 1968. In 1971, Maestro
Radio became incorporated company because of the government law.
Before that, Maestro was managed as a hobby. Then Maestro changed
into a professional management after the law establishment. Finally, on
April 15th 1997, Maestro started broadcasting on FM. Maestro Radio still
exists until present.

E. Method of the Study
In this term paper, I focus on my transcribing problem. For the primary
data, I use my internship journal which I wrote every day during my
internship. I also use some books from library to support my analysis in
this term paper. In addition, I also browse the internet to search more
theories to support my research.

F. Limitation of the Study
The subject which is studied is myself and about transcribing. I am a
student at Maranatha Christian University. I became a transcriber at
Maestro Radio during my internship. The transcription materials were
recordings consisting of lectures about classical music. I did the internship

from July 1st 2010 to August 8th 2010. The working hours are 09.00 –
17.00 from Monday to Friday, and 09.00 – 15.00 on Saturday.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
This term paper has five chapters. Chapter One is about the
Introduction. It consists of Background of the Study, Identification of the
Problem, Objectives and Benefits of the Study, Description of the
Institution, Method of the Study, Limitation of the Study, and Organization
of the Term Paper. Chapter Two consists of Problem Analysis. It
describes the causes and the effects of the problem. Chapter Three

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

During my internship, I had difficulty in transcribing English lecture
recording. I could not finish the transcription because there were some
words that I cannot catch. There are some reasons why I have difficulty in
transcribing the recording. The causes of my problem are lacking of
classical music terms and some English words, and distraction from music
background. There are three effects of my problem; namely, there are
some missing words in my transcription, the result is not accurate, and I
get stressed.
After doing research about my difficulty in transcribing English lecture
recording, I have three potential solutions to solve it. First, I have to
improve my vocabulary by reading English books about classical music.
The potential positive effects of the first solution are that I will know more
about classical music, I can understand the words, and I can complete the
missing words. The potential negative effects of the first solution are losing
my focus, becoming boring, and being sleepy. Second, I have to keep
listening to the recording. The potential positive effects of the second
solution are making corrections, completing the transcription, and
rechecking the transcription. The potential negative effects of the second

15

solution are that it makes me frustrated, and I still cannot catch some
words. Third, I should move to a silent room and work alone. The potential
positive effects of the third solution are more concentration, no
distractions, and I can identify the words easier. The potential negative
effects of the third solution are no chatting, being lonely, and stressful.
In this chapter I would like to analyze the best solution for my problem.
The best solution is to combine all the solutions that I have stated in the
previous chapter. I will explain the reason why it is necessary to combine
all the potential solutions in the following paragraphs.
First, I will improve my vocabulary by reading English book about
classical music. I have to learn more about classical music in order that I
can be familiar with the terms. This can help me to widen my knowledge in
classical music; therefore, I can catch what the speaker says. When I
know more about classical music and its terms, it will be easier for me to
understand and identify what the speaker says in the recording.
Second, I have to move to work alone in a silent room, and keep
listening to the recording. Moving to a silent room will make me do the
transcription better and decrease the possibility of having missing words
because I am focused on listening to it, and there are no distractions.
When I have already known more about classical music and worked
alone, I can do my transcription faster and will not be lonely. Hence, when
moving to a silent room to work alone, it will not be too long for me doing
the transcription because I am more focused listening to the recording. I
will not be bored because I can do the transcription faster than before.

Combining all solutions minimizes the potential negative effects and
maximizes the potential positive effects. Therefore, I will do my job better,
and use my time effectively.
To sum up, it is advisable to combine the three solutions in order to
overcome my problem in transcribing English lecture recording. By
applying each solution in a certain order as I explained in the previous
paragraph, I will get the best result for my transcription. I wish people can
overcome their problem in transcribing by using the solutions that I offer.
