Thailand’s Country Report
Exchange of Information on the progress report of ASEAN member
countries in the wood-based sector
1. OVERVIEW OF WOOD-BASED INDUSTRIES
For the past few decades, wooden industries have developed and divided
from typical sawmills into furniture factory, particleboard factory, MDF
factory, plywood mill, paper pulp mill, etc. Sufficient of raw material,
developing technology, skilled craftmanship, and suitable labor wages has
turned Thailand to be one of the leading the production based exporter in
Southeast Asia. Recently, Thailand has proven itself to be an important
producer of wooden product throughout the world with full pride.
From the growth result of wooden industry occurred continuously, wood
material are becoming shortage. In this period, some wood types such as
rubberwood and eucalyptus have been slowly replaced those forbidden wood
as the economic wood for Thai wooden and furniture industries. In the
future, which direction will the Thai wooden businesses go? If we separate
the wooden business group classified by raw material used, there will be
composed of 4 groups i.e. the first group are the sawing mill, wooden trade
mill, and the small wooden products factory. The second group are the
furniture production industries and value-added wood industries ranging
from a small or complex factory to a medium sized factory. This two groups
used both local and imported woods as raw materials.
The third group are the Pulp-Paper, Particleboard, Hardboard, & MDF
industries which used wood from planted forest such as eucalyptus,
rubberwood, baggarse (sugar cane), bamboo, and local softwood. This group
could not import raw materials as well as the other group since they need
extremely low, priced raw material locally. These are the huge enterprises
that drove the country’s wood-based economy supplying both domestic and
international market. We therefore expand our panel products, not only to
maintain the leadership as the largest manufacturer in Asia, but to become a
world class wood-based panel’s exporter country. We will make a complete
for enhancing its efficiency to sustain competitiveness.
