Editors’ Note
This international seminar on Language Maintenance and Shift II is a continuation of the previous
international seminar with the same theme conducted by the Master Program in Linguistics, Diponegoro
University in July 2011. We do hope that the seminar with this theme can become a yearly program of the
Master Program in Linguistics, Diponegoro University, as we see that this topic still needs our serious
attention due to the inevitable impact of globalization on the life of indigenous languages.
We would like to thank the seminar committee for putting together the seminar that gave rise to this
collection of papers. Thanks also go to the head and secretary of the Master Program in Linguistics
Diponegoro University, without whom the seminar would not have been possible.
The table of contents lists all the papers presented at the seminar. The first five papers are those presented
by invited keynote speakers. They are Prof. Dr. Hanna (Balai Bahasa Provinsi Sulawesi Tenggara,
Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Bambang Kaswanti Purwo (Atma Jaya Catholic University, Indonesia), Dr.
Sugiyono (Language Center, Indonesia), Peter Suwarno, Ph.D (Arizona State University), and Herudjati
Purwoko, Ph.D (Diponegoro University).
In terms of the topic areas, there are 33 papers on language maintenance, 24 papers on language learning,
19 paper on sociolinguistics, 15 paper on pragmatics, 8 papers on discourse analysis, 8 paper on
morphology, 2 papers on syntax, 2 papers on translation, 1 papers on psycholinguistics, 1 papers on
phonology, and 1 papers on semantics.

Abstract
Overseas Chinese, as the third biggest tribe in Indonesia, and one of the big minority groups
in other South East Asia countries, speak in various dialects in their daily life. Those dialects
are their indigenous languages, based on their ancestors’. Most of them speak in Fukien
(Hokkian) or Hakka dialects. Some of them even can speak in the both dialects. They prefer
speak in those dialects to speak in Mandarin. The Chinese cultural value and philosophy
which are taught by the parents and learned by the children continuously in the family take
part in maintaining the indigenous language. Overseas Chinese are still using the language
among their family and peer group who have the same cultural backgrounds. This paper will
discuss in detail how and what efforts have been done by Overseas Chinese ‘Fukien’ and
‘Hakka’ society in Medan, in order to maintain their dialects, which strongly related and
influenced by the Chinese philosophy and culture.
Background
Overseas Chinese in Indonesia, comes from several tribes in China. There are Hokkien (Fukien),
Hakka, Teochiu, Canton, and also some minority groups. Every tribe and minority group has its own
language. Most of overseas Chinese in Indonesia are Hokkien and Hakka. Due to that issue, Hokkien and
Hakka dialects are the most Chinese spoken dialects in Indonesia.
The most largest population of Hokkien and Hakka are in Medan. As the third biggest cities in
Indonesia and the capital of North Sumatera province, Medan has great population of overseas Chinese,
compɲre to other ɲreɲs/cities in Indonesiɲ. A highly visiɳle component of Medɲn’s populɲtion is the lɲrge
number of overseas Chinese, unlike the overseas Chinese in other areas/cities in Indonesia, they continue
to speak Hokkien and Hakka.
This phenomenon is rare for societies in Indonesia, who are mostly speak Indonesian language,
although they are Chinese. Hokkien and Hakka dialects are continuously spoken by overseas Chinese
from generation to generation, without contaminated by Indonesia language.
Maintaining to speak in Chinese dialects by the 20 percent Chinese population in Medan, is
influence of Chinese philosophy and culture, which rooted deeply in the people minds. The children
taught how to maintain well the cultures, the behaviors, the attitudes, the way of thinking and
communication in their own dialects. These issues are taught continuously through generations in
family.

Confucianism is the most well-known philosophy being implemented widely among Chinese family.
The moral teaching and way of life which are taught in Confucianism, have been implemented well from
the parents to the children. Communication in their Chinese dialects, Hokkien and Hakka has been spoken
since they immigrated to Indonesia, and settled in Medan.
As the first group of Overseas Chinese to settle in large numbers, Hokkien community became the
dominant immigrant group. Descendants of Hokkien people are the dominant group in Medan. Beside

Hokkien, Hakka community is the second largest group in Medan, who emigrated out from their home
region in China, in several waves from 1850 o 1930 (Passchier:2000).
As the biggest Overseas Chinese group in Medan, Hokkiens have influence their dialect to other
smaller Overseas Chinese groups in Medan. As the result, Hokkien dialect can be spoken by all Chinese
in Medan.
The Chinese Philosophy : Confucianism
Confucianism is Chinese ethical and philosophical system developed from the teaching of the
Chinese philosopher, Confucius. It influenced the mind and the life of Chinese wherever they are. Its
impacts are tightly can be seen in the Chinese cultures and values of Chinese descendents (Rainey:2010).
The core of Confucianism is humanism, the belief that human beings are teachable, improvable and
perfectible through self- cultivation and self- creation (Lai:2008). Confucianism focuses on the cultivation
of virtue and maintenance of ethics, the most basic of which are ren, yi, and li. Ren is an obligation of
altruism and humaneness for other individuals within a community, yi is the upholding of righteousness
and the moral disposition to do good, and li is a system of norms and propriety that determines how a
person should properly act within a community (Rainey:2010).
Except ren, yi, and li, there is another core in Confucianism, called xiao (filial piety), which is
considered ɲmong the greɲtest of virtues ɲnd must ɳe shown in the certɲin relɲtionships. The term ‘filiɲl’
(meaning ‘of ɲ child’) chɲrɲcterizes the respect thɲt ɲ child, originɲlly ɲ son, should show to his pɲrents.
This relationship was extended by analogy to a series of five relationships. The five bonds are the
relationship between ruler to ruled, father to son, husband to wife, elder brother to younger brother, and
friend to friend.
Relɲtionships ɲre centrɲl to Confuciɲnism. Pɲrticulɲr duties ɲrise from one’s pɲrticulɲr situɲtion in
relation to others. The individual stands simultaneously in several different relationships with different
people, including the relationship between parents and children. The juniors are considered in
Confucianism to owe their senior reverence, seniors also have duties of benevolence and concern toward
juniors. This kind of mutuality relationship is prevalent in Chinese society even to this day.
The relationship and the obligation of each individual in the relationship based on the teaching of
Confucianism have brought the ideas to obey strictly to the rules, and agreements in the society, including
in the family. The obligation of altruism in obeying and running those have been decided and organized
well through generations, should be agreed and implemented without any excuse.
The goal of the obedience attitudes among individual in society is social harmony, which is also the
great goal of Confucianism. Therefore it results in part from every individual knowing his or her place in
the social order, and playing his or her part well in society. It has been arranged well and become fixed
pattern in the society. Once someone acts against the agreement in the society, he or she will be claimed
as traitor toward his/her family or group.
Maintaining Hokkien and Hakka Dialects through Understanding Confucianism.
As Hokkien ɲnd Hɲkkɲ diɲlects ɲre spoken ɲmong fɲmily’s memɳers through generɲtions, it hɲs
been a must for every member in the family to communicate to each other in those dialects
(Pɲsschier:1997). The oɳligɲtion of ɲltruism in everyone’s mind hɲs trɲined him/her to obey to the family
and what have been run whole these times. Since the dialects have been spoken from the parents to them,
ɲs children, they cɲn’t refuse to speɲk in those diɲlects continuously. As time goes ɳy, it hɲs ɳecome the
habit which runs daily, in their life.
Filial piety (xiao) as one of the core in Confucianism, plays its roles in order to make the agreement
and obligations run smoothly. Every member in family should act based on their position in family. The
mind and the feeling should be integrated and the result can be seen through the attitudes toward other
fɲmily’s memɳers (Lew:1998).

The other core in Confucianism, ren( humanity), as the sense of human life (the feeling of humanity
towards others and self-esteem for oneself), brings the pride to be a Hokkien or Hakka is also made them
proud of themselves. It’s ɲn honor for them to ɳe pɲrt of the group’s memɳers. The ɲɳility in speɲking the
related dialect shows the identity of the speaker. Every member tries hard to leɲrn his/her group’s diɲlect,
in order to be accepted in the group. Without the ability to speak the dialect, somehow he/she feels that
the society doesn’t wɲnt to ɲdmit ɲnd ɲccept him/her sincerely. If they cɲn’t speɲk in the sɲme diɲlect,
they will ɳe treɲted ɲs strɲngers or outsiders. Of course, no one wɲnts to ɳe rejected. Thɲt’s why it is
importɲnt to ɳe ɲɳle to speɲk in their owned group’s diɲlect (Yɲo:2000)
The next principle in Confucianism teaching is li. Li can be defined as concrete guide to human
relationships or rules of proper action that genuinely embody the humanity and general principle of social
order or the general ordering of life. Through this principle, Confucius emphasized the fact that people
need a well ordered society for wren to be expressed. It also emphasized the way things should be done or
propriety, positive rather than negative. The main components of propriety emphasize the openness of
people to each other (Rainey: 2010).
This principle influence the way people act to each other. Speaking in the same dialect make
everyone feel comfortable. Each person feels the sense of belongingness while they talk to each other;
just like they belong to same family. They feel the boundaries and close relationship among them while
they speak in the same dialect. Those feelings give them strength to continue speak in the dialect
wherever they are and whenever they speak.
The final principle discussed in this paper is yi. Yi means righteousness; the moral disposition to do
good. It covers the ability to recognize what is right and good. It also includes the ability to feel, under the
circumstances what are the right things to do. It can be considered as the intuition that guide to the right
direction that should be done (Rainey:2010).
Speaking in the same dialect make the speakers feel they can understand each other very well.
Somehow, they even know and understand their speaking partners mind and feeling. Without have to say
it out, the members have intuitions that guide them to understand each other among them. They
understand which thing is allowed to do, and which thing is forbidden (Yao:2000).
These are the core in Confucianism which cause the Hokkien and Hakka dialects are maintained well
till today.
Conclusion
The core teaching of Confucianism brings lots of influences in maintaining well the Hokkien and
Hakka dialects in Medan. The Overseas Chinese think, behave, and act based on what have been taught
by Confucius. Through understanding the principles of Confucianism, members in group make and keep
the good relationship among them. The relationship is supported by their abilities and their intentions to
communicate with each others in same dialect.
Hokkien and Hakka as the first and second biggest Overseas Chinese groups in Medan have proved
their loyalty and consistency to maintain their dialects well. The dialects have been spoken through
generations.
Finally, it is concluded that by understanding the Confucianism, Hokkien and Hakka speakers are led
to maintain the dialects.

This international seminar on Language Maintenance and Shift II is a continuation of the previous
international seminar with the same theme conducted by the Master Program in Linguistics, Diponegoro
University in July 2011. We do hope that the seminar with this theme can become a yearly program of the
Master Program in Linguistics, Diponegoro University, as we see that this topic still needs our serious
attention due to the inevitable impact of globalization on the life of indigenous languages.
We would like to thank the seminar committee for putting together the seminar that gave rise to this
collection of papers. Thanks also go to the head and secretary of the Master Program in Linguistics
Diponegoro University, without whom the seminar would not have been possible.
The table of contents lists all the papers presented at the seminar. The first five papers are those presented

MAINTAINING INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING THE
PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE
(The Problem in maintaining ‘Fukien (Hokkien)’ and ‘Hakka’ dialects as indigenous language among
Overseas Chinese Society in Medan, North Sumatera)

Abstract
Overseas Chinese, as the third biggest tribe in Indonesia, and one of the big minority groups
in other South East Asia countries, speak in various dialects in their daily life. Those dialects
are their indigenous languages, based on their ancestors’. Most of them speak in Fukien
(Hokkian) or Hakka dialects. Some of them even can speak in the both dialects. They prefer
speak in those dialects to speak in Mandarin. The Chinese cultural value and philosophy
which are taught by the parents and learned by the children continuously in the family take
part in maintaining the indigenous language. Overseas Chinese are still using the language
among their family and peer group who have the same cultural backgrounds. This paper will
discuss in detail how and what efforts have been done by Overseas Chinese ‘Fukien’ and
‘Hakka’ society in Medan, in order to maintain their dialects, which strongly related and
influenced by the Chinese philosophy and culture.
Background
Overseas Chinese in Indonesia, comes from several tribes in China. There are Hokkien (Fukien),
Hakka, Teochiu, Canton, and also some minority groups. Every tribe and minority group has its own
language. Most of overseas Chinese in Indonesia are Hokkien and Hakka. Due to that issue, Hokkien and
Hakka dialects are the most Chinese spoken dialects in Indonesia.
The most largest population of Hokkien and Hakka are in Medan. As the third biggest cities in
Indonesia and the capital of North Sumatera province, Medan has great population of overseas Chinese,
compɲre to other ɲreɲs/cities in Indonesiɲ. A highly visiɳle component of Medɲn’s populɲtion is the lɲrge
number of overseas Chinese, unlike the overseas Chinese in other areas/cities in Indonesia, they continue
to speak Hokkien and Hakka.
This phenomenon is rare for societies in Indonesia, who are mostly speak Indonesian language,
although they are Chinese. Hokkien and Hakka dialects are continuously spoken by overseas Chinese
from generation to generation, without contaminated by Indonesia language.
Maintaining to speak in Chinese dialects by the 20 percent Chinese population in Medan, is
influence of Chinese philosophy and culture, which rooted deeply in the people minds. The children
taught how to maintain well the cultures, the behaviors, the attitudes, the way of thinking and
communication in their own dialects. These issues are taught continuously through generations in
family.

Confucianism is the most well-known philosophy being implemented widely among Chinese family.
The moral teaching and way of life which are taught in Confucianism, have been implemented well from
the parents to the children. Communication in their Chinese dialects, Hokkien and Hakka has been spoken
since they immigrated to Indonesia, and settled in Medan.
As the first group of Overseas Chinese to settle in large numbers, Hokkien community became the
dominant immigrant group. Descendants of Hokkien people are the dominant group in Medan. Beside

Hokkien, Hakka community is the second largest group in Medan, who emigrated out from their home
region in China, in several waves from 1850 o 1930 (Passchier:2000).
As the biggest Overseas Chinese group in Medan, Hokkiens have influence their dialect to other
smaller Overseas Chinese groups in Medan. As the result, Hokkien dialect can be spoken by all Chinese
in Medan.
The Chinese Philosophy : Confucianism
Confucianism is Chinese ethical and philosophical system developed from the teaching of the
Chinese philosopher, Confucius. It influenced the mind and the life of Chinese wherever they are. Its
impacts are tightly can be seen in the Chinese cultures and values of Chinese descendents (Rainey:2010).
The core of Confucianism is humanism, the belief that human beings are teachable, improvable and
perfectible through self- cultivation and self- creation (Lai:2008). Confucianism focuses on the cultivation
of virtue and maintenance of ethics, the most basic of which are ren, yi, and li. Ren is an obligation of
altruism and humaneness for other individuals within a community, yi is the upholding of righteousness
and the moral disposition to do good, and li is a system of norms and propriety that determines how a
person should properly act within a community (Rainey:2010).
Except ren, yi, and li, there is another core in Confucianism, called xiao (filial piety), which is
considered ɲmong the greɲtest of virtues ɲnd must ɳe shown in the certɲin relɲtionships. The term ‘filiɲl’
(meaning ‘of ɲ child’) chɲrɲcterizes the respect thɲt ɲ child, originɲlly ɲ son, should show to his pɲrents.
This relationship was extended by analogy to a series of five relationships. The five bonds are the
relationship between ruler to ruled, father to son, husband to wife, elder brother to younger brother, and
friend to friend.
Relɲtionships ɲre centrɲl to Confuciɲnism. Pɲrticulɲr duties ɲrise from one’s pɲrticulɲr situɲtion in
relation to others. The individual stands simultaneously in several different relationships with different
people, including the relationship between parents and children. The juniors are considered in
Confucianism to owe their senior reverence, seniors also have duties of benevolence and concern toward
juniors. This kind of mutuality relationship is prevalent in Chinese society even to this day.
The relationship and the obligation of each individual in the relationship based on the teaching of
Confucianism have brought the ideas to obey strictly to the rules, and agreements in the society, including
in the family. The obligation of altruism in obeying and running those have been decided and organized
well through generations, should be agreed and implemented without any excuse.
The goal of the obedience attitudes among individual in society is social harmony, which is also the
great goal of Confucianism. Therefore it results in part from every individual knowing his or her place in
the social order, and playing his or her part well in society. It has been arranged well and become fixed
pattern in the society. Once someone acts against the agreement in the society, he or she will be claimed
as traitor toward his/her family or group.
Maintaining Hokkien and Hakka Dialects through Understanding Confucianism.
As Hokkien ɲnd Hɲkkɲ diɲlects ɲre spoken ɲmong fɲmily’s memɳers through generɲtions, it hɲs
been a must for every member in the family to communicate to each other in those dialects
(Pɲsschier:1997). The oɳligɲtion of ɲltruism in everyone’s mind hɲs trɲined him/her to obey to the family
and what have been run whole these times. Since the dialects have been spoken from the parents to them,
ɲs children, they cɲn’t refuse to speɲk in those diɲlects continuously. As time goes ɳy, it hɲs ɳecome the
habit which runs daily, in their life.
Filial piety (xiao) as one of the core in Confucianism, plays its roles in order to make the agreement
and obligations run smoothly. Every member in family should act based on their position in family. The
mind and the feeling should be integrated and the result can be seen through the attitudes toward other
fɲmily’s memɳers (Lew:1998).

The other core in Confucianism, ren( humanity), as the sense of human life (the feeling of humanity
towards others and self-esteem for oneself), brings the pride to be a Hokkien or Hakka is also made them
proud of themselves. It’s ɲn honor for them to ɳe pɲrt of the group’s memɳers. The ɲɳility in speɲking the
related dialect shows the identity of the speaker. Every member tries hard to leɲrn his/her group’s diɲlect,
in order to be accepted in the group. Without the ability to speak the dialect, somehow he/she feels that
the society doesn’t wɲnt to ɲdmit ɲnd ɲccept him/her sincerely. If they cɲn’t speɲk in the sɲme diɲlect,
they will ɳe treɲted ɲs strɲngers or outsiders. Of course, no one wɲnts to ɳe rejected. Thɲt’s why it is
importɲnt to ɳe ɲɳle to speɲk in their owned group’s diɲlect (Yɲo:2000)
The next principle in Confucianism teaching is li. Li can be defined as concrete guide to human
relationships or rules of proper action that genuinely embody the humanity and general principle of social
order or the general ordering of life. Through this principle, Confucius emphasized the fact that people
need a well ordered society for wren to be expressed. It also emphasized the way things should be done or
propriety, positive rather than negative. The main components of propriety emphasize the openness of
people to each other (Rainey: 2010).
This principle influence the way people act to each other. Speaking in the same dialect make
everyone feel comfortable. Each person feels the sense of belongingness while they talk to each other;
just like they belong to same family. They feel the boundaries and close relationship among them while
they speak in the same dialect. Those feelings give them strength to continue speak in the dialect
wherever they are and whenever they speak.
The final principle discussed in this paper is yi. Yi means righteousness; the moral disposition to do
good. It covers the ability to recognize what is right and good. It also includes the ability to feel, under the
circumstances what are the right things to do. It can be considered as the intuition that guide to the right
direction that should be done (Rainey:2010).
Speaking in the same dialect make the speakers feel they can understand each other very well.
Somehow, they even know and understand their speaking partners mind and feeling. Without have to say
it out, the members have intuitions that guide them to understand each other among them. They
understand which thing is allowed to do, and which thing is forbidden (Yao:2000).
These are the core in Confucianism which cause the Hokkien and Hakka dialects are maintained well
till today.
Conclusion
The core teaching of Confucianism brings lots of influences in maintaining well the Hokkien and
Hakka dialects in Medan. The Overseas Chinese think, behave, and act based on what have been taught
by Confucius. Through understanding the principles of Confucianism, members in group make and keep
the good relationship among them. The relationship is supported by their abilities and their intentions to
communicate with each others in same dialect.
Hokkien and Hakka as the first and second biggest Overseas Chinese groups in Medan have proved
their loyalty and consistency to maintain their dialects well. The dialects have been spoken through
generations.
Finally, it is concluded that by understanding the Confucianism, Hokkien and Hakka speakers are led
to maintain the dialects.
