COMPARISON BETWEEN THE EFFECT OF RAW HONEY FROM MADU PERHUTANI AND GEMFIBROZIL ON BLOOD TRIACYLGLYCEROL LEVEL OF HYPERLIPIDEMIC MODEL WISTAR RATS.

ABSTRACT
Hyperlipidemic condition is a health hazard, associated with
cardiovascular diseases. Acquired hypertriglyceridemia can be largely due to
excessive intake of high fat diet as designed in this study, and accumulation of fat
can cause increasing free radical in the body due to oxidative and lipid
peroxidation in presence of metal in vivo. An Indonesian local raw honey from
Madu Perhutani has tested for its antioxidant content, and in this study the aim is
to prove the antioxidant effect towards lowering blood triacylglycerol (formerly
named triglyceride) with gemfibrozil as comparison for effectiveness.
This laboratory based experiment involved 24 subjects from Wistar breed
rats with four different groups. Group I as control negative, with normal subjects
as baseline standard during the whole experiment, while group II or control
positive were hyperlipidemic induced rats without any treatment given. Group III
was hyperlipidemic induced, and given with raw honey from Madu Perhutani,
and group IV was given with gemfibrozil drug concomitantly induced to be
hyperlipidemic. The blood triacylglycerol measurement was done automatically
by principle of enzymatic glycerol phosphate oxidase (GPO).
The result proved that this local honey, with its minimum antioxidant
dosage based on previous antioxidant test has started to give the effect on
preventing blood triacylglycerol level not to rise too high, yet not enough to act
effectively as gemfibrozil. Based on the fact, raw honey from Madu Perhutani

was concluded to give an effect starting from its minimum dosage of antioxidant
activity, 2.4g/200gBW orally.
