DEBATERS‟ PERCEPTION OF ENGLISH DEBATE CONTRIBUTION 1
Debaters’ Perception on English Debate Contribution to Their
English Proficiency
Kiki Kurniawati
Abstract
This study investigated six non English Department debaters‟ perception of
English debate contribution to their English proficiency. The participants, selected
from six universities all around Indonesia, were octofinalists in Indonesian
Varsities English Debate (IVED) 2011. The data were collected through single
interviews in order to explore deeper information from the participants. Content
analysis was then used to analyze the data. The findings were explored by using
descriptive written explanation which discussed two major categories of debaters‟
positive perception. The first was debaters‟ perception of English debate‟s
contribution to their language skills, which are speaking, listening, writing,
vocabulary and grammar. The second were non- language skills areas which
covered reading habit, critical thinking, and confidence. This study finally gave
new insights for English Debating Society of Satya Wacana Christian University
to challenge the common belief: English debates were only for English
Department students. The findings of this study also highlighted the benefit of
incorporating debate into classroom activities.
