ABSTRACT
The aims of this research were to find out: 1) the category of second semester students of English Education Department in mastering passive form and 2) to find out the typical errors which are made by students in using passive form. The method of this research was descriptive. The instrument applied in this research was test. There were 32 students as the sample taken from 30% of the population. After analyzing the data, it revealed that students‟ mastery in using passive form of three tenses belonged to fair category. It can be seen from the result of students‟ mean, 50.46. The basic analysis of the grammatical errors types was relied on surface strategy taxonomy (Dulay, Burt, and Kreshen, 1981). The data result showed that types of errors in using passive form of simple present tense put from highest to lowest were omission errors (48.61%), misformation errors (46.97%), addition errors (2.77%), and misordering errors (1.65%) from the total frequency 181 errors. Types of errors in using passive form of simple past tense put from highest to lowest were misformation errors (55.56%), omission errors (31.94%), addition errors (8.34%), and misordering errors (4.16%) from the total frequency 144 errors. Then types of errors in using passive form of present perfect tense put from highest to lowest were misformation errors (38.04%), omission errors (36.19%), addition errors (17.18%), and misordering errors (8.59%) from the total frequency 163 errors. The findings showed that misformation error was the highest occurrence of those three tenses (46.51%).
