ABSTRACT
Dewi, Syenti,2004.How the English Teachers of SMPK St. AgnesSurabaya
Motivatethe Studentsand Maintain the Motivation in LearningEnglish:An

Key words:Motivation,Leaming
English is one of the most important languagesin the world. That is why
the governmentof IndonesiaplacesEnglish as one of the compulsorysubjectsin
every school. This condition sometimesmakes some students feel forced in
leaming English. They only learn English by following the lessonat school, but
they do not have any interestor motivation in learningthe language.Meanwhile,
one of the keys to successin language learning is motivation. By having
motivationthe studentsleam more actively. If a sedent is not motivatedto learrl
he will reject the learningsituationswhich canproducethe desiredchanges,in the
way, he will not gain any success@onald, 1966:12).In this case,a teacherhasan
important role in the classroomin motivating the studentsand also maintaining
the motivationin learningthe language.
In this study the writer did someobservationsto know how the English
teachersmotivate the studentsand maintain the motivation in learningEnglish.
The writer conductedthe observationat SMPK St. AgnesSurabaya. So, herethe
writer observedthe English teachers' strategiesin motivating the studentsand
maintainingthe motivationin leamingEnglish.
This is a qualitative researchthat analyzesteaching activities that take
place in natural settings. The teachingactivitiesthat are observedcan be usedto
describethe teachers' strategiesin motivating the studentsand maintainingthe
motivationin learningEnglish.
After doing five time observationson teacherA and five time observations
on teacher B, the writer found out that both teachersalmost used the same
strategiesin motivating the students. The samestrategieswere: demonstrateand
talk about the teacher's enthusiasmsfor the coursematerial and how it affects
him personally, develop a personal relationship with the students, create a
pleasantand supportiveatmospherein the classroonl makethe curriculumand the
teaching materials relevant to the students, take the students' learning very
seriously, and promote the developmentof group cohesiveness.
Then, the other
strategiesof teacherA which were not samewith teacherB were: promote the
students'awarenessof the instrumentalvaluesassociatedwith the knowledgeof
an Lz, and promote the learners'languagerelatedvaluesby presentingpeer role
models.Meanwhile, teacherB's strategywhich was not samewith teacherA was:
help to create realistic learner beliefs. Teacher A applied four strategiesin
maintaining the motivation. The strategies were: make the learning more
stimulatingand enjoyablefor the learnerby breakingthe monotony of classroom
vlll
events, make leamingstimulatingand enjoyablefor the learnersby enlistingthem
as active task participation, help diminish language anxiety by removing or
reducingthe anxietyprovoking elementsin the learningenvironmentand raisethe
students' self motivating capaclty. However, in terms of maintaining the
motivatiorl it was found out that teacherB never used any strategyto maintain
her students'motivationin leamingEnglish.
The writer suggeststhat a teacherf, lry vary the strategiesin motivatingthe
studentsand maintainingthe motivation, so that the studentswill not feel bored
during the lesson. A teacher should also maintain the motivation, so that the
studentscanalwaysbe encouragedto leam actively.
