INTRODUCTION A Descriptive Study On The Teaching Methods Applied By The On The Job Training Students In SMP Al Islam I Surakarta.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Sutopo, et al., (2011: 1) states that” the teacher should have four competencies;
pedagogical, professional, personal, and social”. In other words, the teacher should have
communicative competence. Savignon (1983: 8) states that:
” communicative competence is a dynamic rather than a static concept. It
depends on the negotiation of meaning between two or more persons who
share to some degree the same symbolic system. In this sense, then,
communicative competence can be said to be an interpersonal rather than
an intrapersonal trait”.
In this case, the teacher has to be able to create interesting materials for the students in the
process of teaching and they have to know what the method applied it. On the other hand,
the competencies of the teacher in teaching-learning process influence the success of
students in their study.
On the Job- training program is the program held to train the university students,
especially those of School of Teacher Training and Education to practice teaching.
Ideally, they should be able to choose the methods to develop the students’ ability, and
hence teaching method is needed in teaching-learning process.

Method is a generalized set of classroom specifications for
accomplishing linguistic objectives. Methods tend to be concerned
primarily with teacher and student roles and behaviors and

objectives, sequencing, and materials (Brown, 2001: 16).
In addition, Richards and Rodgers (1986: 16) states that”a method is
theoretically related to an approach, is organizationally determined by a design,
and is practically realized in procedure”. So, the method can build students’
motivation in learning English and it makes the teacher easier to know how to
teach well in teaching-learning process.
