Food and Nutrition security for the next zs

Context: Climate change is significantly impacting agriculture by increasing water demand, limiting
crop
productivity and by reCucing water availability in areas where irrigation is molt needed.
Recenly, in these
areas' tl're rising food prices and long term trends of growing consumption and market c1emand for food,
biofuels' raw materials, forest and cai-bon sequestration, etc. drive speculation on long-term price
rises
for land and agricultural prcducts, and then constrtute tne drivers of global trade of la-nd grabbing from
international investors. ln these areas, generally characterizecl by lowpurchasing power o-t populitions,
food insecurity and malnutrition are increasing. How will these phenomena continuously affeci the food
and nutrition security in Africa, Asia and Latin America in the next 25 50 years? The course will provide
some diagnoses and some prospects.
Organizers: This Summer School is jointly organized by the University of Abomey-Calavi (Republic of
Benin), the Food Security Center of the University of Hohenheim (Germany), EXCEED ("Higher Education
Excellence in Development Cooperation") and funded through the DAAD with funds from the German
Federal Ministry for Economic cooperation and Deveropment (BlVlZ)

Venue and dates: The course will be held at the University of Abomey-Calavi (Republic of Benin), from
6 to 25 November 2017.

Participants: The course is open to 12 PhD students from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Modules: Three modules will be organised:
' Modrlle 1 (Nover-nber,6 - 11,2A17): Climate chan.ge and.-arater security: clinrate change, water
security, and food production and security; trends in agricultural water demands; economic
competition for agricultural water management; prospects for adaptation to irrigation systems and
changing river basin levels; policy development implications.
' Module 2 (November, 13 - 18, 20171: Global trade and land grabbling: Food penury, increase of
food prices, fuel shock, and nuirition status; land rights and larrci governance for agricultuial economics
performance; the role of water and destinations of production from large-scale land acquisitions; the
yield gap in target countries; prospects and tools for eradication
' Module 3 (November, 20 -25,20171: Food & Nutrition security. Assessment of nutrition status
and disease-related malnutrition; chronic, transitory and cyclical, acute and temporary food insecurity;
nutrition gaps, Global Hunger lndex, Hidden Hunger lndex, dietary diversity inOex, Omega-3;
prospects and tools for eradication.

Scholarships: The Food Security Center of the University of Hchenheim (Germany) will offer up to 12
scholarships for applicants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America to participate in this course Scholarships

will include the air ticket, accommodation, meals, and transportation in Benin. Other costs are at the
Student's expense.

Language: The course will be delivered in English. Participants are expected to be fluent in English

Applications: Motivated PhD students from Africa, Asia and Latin America are requested to send their
applications rn English including a CV, a letter of motivation, and a cerlificate of enrollment at their

First of all allow us draw your attention towards the upcoming agenda within our faculty
Smart City, Vlllage, and Region (SCVR) summer course is short term
intensive course which takes place in Faculty of Geography,

Universitas Gadjah Mada, lndonesia.
summer course is designed for
students who are willlng to work hard to improve their understanding,
knowledge, and skili in smart city, village and region. Various
participants are encouraged to join this course in order to enrich the
discussion; from undergraduates, post graduates, PhD stucjents,
professionals, and also instituiions.

THE FOCUS
SCVR summer course offers various learning methods. Combining inside

class learning and chance to do field observation. This course aim for
the participants to gain most of experiences regarding the knowledge
of smart city, village, and region as a whole. Not only participants
will learn the necessary knowledge in class, but also they will do an
excursion around Yogyakarla and Surakarta to do direct observation of
srnart city, village and region implementation in the area.
The course material that will be given by Asian and Europeans experts
in Smart city, viilage, and region will cover various topics.
1 Understanding city, vlllage, arrd region; and identification of problems
2. Definition and concept of SCVR
3 lnfrastructure for supporting SCVR
4. Social political aspects of SCVR
5 Aspect of information technology for SCVR
6. lmplementation of SCVR: elements, indicators and components

Case study and exercise

HOW TO APPLY
Smart city, village, and region summer course invites university
students (graduates, post graduates, and PhD students), professionals,

and institutions from all over the globe. The course fee for students

is USD 350, and for professionals and institutions is USD 600 -(if

without accommodation will be USD 350). Course fee provides the
