This thesis is entitled "Napoleon'sAmbition Describedin Selinko,s
Ddsirde". It has three objectives. The first one is to describethe general
descriptionaboutNapoleonasthe main character
described
in Selinko,sDisiree;
the secondone is to describethe internal and externalconflict experiencedby
Napoleonandthethird oneis to describeNapoleon'sambition.
In discussing the topic, the approach methods are structural and
psychologicalmethod. This structural approachwas applied to analyze
the
characterof NapoleonBonaparteandhow the conflictsin{luencethe deveiopment
of Napoleon's character. psychological approach was applied to uiulyr"
Napoleon'sambition.
The conclusionindicatesthat Napoleonis the protagonistor the main
character,who dominates,supportsand influencesothei characters.
Napoleon,s
characterbelongsto a roundand a developingcharacter.He hasa round.iuru"r.,.
becausehe hasmorethan one sideof charactersand he is a developingcharacter
becausehe haschangesin his character.He facestwo kinds of conflilt; intemal
andexternalconflicts.lnternalconflict is conflictsbetweenNapoleonandhimself.
In onemomentin his life he feelshe is treateddisgracefultyanOis ignoredby the
governmentwhom he expectswill fulfill his ambitionto be the tup...io" command
in Italy' Howeverit is not easydue to his character:he is too confidentand has
a
high self-esteem.
Actually, the internal conflict experiencedby Napoleonresult
from his ambitionthat in{luencehim personally.Examplesof externalcon{lictshe
experiences
are conflictsbetweenhim andBernadineEugdnieD6sir6eClary, and
betweenhim and Josephinede Beauhamais,both of wf,ich are.aboutloue anO
unfaithfulness.The third externalconflict is NapoleonBonaparteagainstJeanBaptisteBernadottethat is aboutthe political ambition.
The resultof psychologpcalanalysisshowsthat Napoleon'sambitionis the
accumulationof Napoleon'scharacteristics
aspersonwith greatmotivationand a
strongdesireto obtainsuccess,
power,andwealth.
