CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. The Background of the Study
The rapid development of technology information at the present time is
capable of providing easiness for humans to communicate and fulfilling the needs
of information which can be done anywhere. One way to communicate and seek
information that many people choice is the internet. And this time the internet has
become the information media spotlight because it has a usage rate increased
significantly.
Currently, many educational institutions have been facilitating students to
access the widest information through the internet (Deddy, 2012). In educational
institution, especially in university, the internet is no longer just supporting
facilities, but has become a necessity of the students in obtaining the information.
Students may establish their own online community. They also share
information through blogs, forums, groups simultaneously establish interaction
through social media as Facebook. Facebook Group as online media is one tool
that can facilitate the course of communication, information and specific
objectives. In this case Facebook Group acts as a media to deliver information to
the audience so that the information can be easily accepted by the group members.
The information presented in the facebook group can be any announcement in
which any members belonging to the group can know the information displayed
on the wall. Student use facebook group to share information both academic and

1

2

non-academic information to all members of the group and the most widely used
because of the announcement can be read anytime and anywhere.
Facebook is also widely used by students as a means to interact and
exchange information about classes and announcements of lecture (Febrida: 2013)
in which each application is displayed on the wall of facebook as interesting
photos, videos, websites, status, announcements, online shops, advertisements and
character insights can respond by any person who read (Veer, 2010: 74) which
allows the interaction available on each comment box.
Interactions that occur have a rule where the exchange of information
between the writer and the reader, and also the using of speech function by the
participants in the interaction. Example:
OPR: The Almamater already have been here. If you want to embroidery
your name, you can directly order and pay. Send your name and the
size of yours.
M1: How much its cost?
OPR : Rp. 120.000
M2 : Where can we take the Almamater?
OPR: You can take it in FIP
In conversation above, the types of speech function that used by OPR is
Statement (S) and Response Statement to Question (RSQ), used by M1 and M2
are question (Q). M1 and M2 are raising a question in their orientation of
initiating the information whereas M1 is responding to the question. The move

3

initiated by M1 and M2 is termed as k2 (Secondary knower move) and the move
conveyed by OPR is called k1 (primary knower move). So, the patterns of Move
of the conversation are k2 ^ k1 and k2 ^ k1. Every announcement which displayed
on Persma Bimed group has different intention and the different intention of
announcements create different patterns of Move. We can compare the example
below to the example above.
OPR: For all my friends who want to participate the BMGTS in Padang
Sidempuan area and South of Tapanuli are expected to come on:
day : Wednesday, December 18th, 2013
time: 3 p.m.
place : Auditorium DPR (Under Shady Trees)
M1 : Okey
OPR: Don’t say Okey if you’ll notcome.
From the conversation above, the pattern of Move that used in the
conversation is k1 ^ k2f ^ k1f , where the OPR as a person who knows and tells
the information and M1 as a person who follow-up the OPR’s information then
the OPR follow-up too.
To know the structure of the interaction of a conversation, it is necessary
to know the exchange between speaker (addresser) and listener (addressee) which
called as Move, includes the exchange of information and the exchange of
services and its necessary to know the using of speech function in a conversation,
includes Declarative, Imperative and Interrogative. A research which found the
exchange of information done by Thwaite (2014)on the using of moves were used

4

by teachers with the children showed that in the conversation dominantly the
teachers as a ‘Delayed primary knower’ (dk1) move where the teacher knows the
answer. The dk1 moves are used to check that the children have followed
instructions, and sometimes simply to ensure that they are involved in the
discourse. Then, a research which found the exchange of service done by
Purwaningjati (2011) in identifying and describing the pattern of negotiation in
students’ casual conversation showed that 45,7% were responding move or
dominantly the student as a ‘primary actor’ (a1) where the student tended to
support the proposition delivered and they also prefer to continue their
proposition. And the research which found the Speech function in conversation
done by Araghi (2011) on his research in determining the realization of Speech
function in mood (Declaratives, Interrogatives and Imperatives) used by
interlocutors with different genders showed that dominant speech function used
by both genders was Declarative that causing the process of meaning exchange to
be one-side and partial.
This research focused on the types of speech function and Move in
announcement displayed on facebook’s Persma Bimed group.

5

B. The Problems of the Study
The problems in this study were identified as the following:
1. What are the types of speech function used in the conversation among the
members of Facebook’s Persma Bimed Group?
2. What are the patterns of Move used in the conversation among the members
of Persma Bimed group?

C. The objectives of the Study
The objectives of the study were identified as the following:
1. To find out the types of Speech Function used in the conversation among the
members of Persma Bimed group.
2. To find out the patterns of Move which used in the conversation among the
members of Persma Bimed group.

D. The scope of the study
The scope of this study identified in terms of the structure of interaction. The
structure of interaction must be understood as the function or role played by a
speaker or a writer (addresser) in a conversation in its relation to the function or
role played by a hearer or reader (addressee). This study focused to analyze the
speech function and Move in the conversation among the members in the
announcement displayed on Persma Bimed group.

6

E. The significants of the study
The findings of this research were expected to be useful for:
1. Theoretically, this research is expected to give information and knowledge to
students of English Department about the types of Speech Function and the
structure of interaction in its application in social networking.
2. Practically, this research is expected to other researchers, especially those
majoring linguistics to conduct further research about the types of Speech
Function and the structure of interaction in its application in social
networking.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

A. Conclusions
After analyzing the data, it can be concluded that:
1. The types of Speech Function which used by the members of Persma Bimed
group are Statement (S), Acknowledge Statement (AS), Question (Q),
Response Statement to Question (RSQ), Command (C) and Response Offer
to Command (ROC). There are no Offer (O) and Acknowledge Offer (AO)
which used by the members of Persma Bimed.
2. The structures (patterns) of interaction in exchanging Information which used
by the members of Persma Bimed group are k1 ^ k2f, k1 ^ k2f ^ k1f, k2 ^ k1,
k2 ^ k1 ^ k2f and exchanging action is a2 ^ a1. And there is dynamics of
exchange which found in the conversations, it is cl ^ rcl.

B. Suggestions
By considering the research findings and the conclusions, there are some
suggestions which are stated in the following:
1. For the students of English Department should learn and know how to
communicate by realizing and exposing the function of the speech and the
structure of interaction especially in exchanging informations or services.

44

45

2. For others researcher, to analyze the types of Speech function and Move of
conversation, the theory of Speech Function and Move can be implemented.
