ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF UIR TO COMPREHEND FIGURATIVE

LANGUAGE FOUND IN SOME SHORT STORIES

  Abstract

  The objective of this research was to know the third year students’ ability to comprehend figurative language as found in some short stories. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the third years students of English Department of UIR. The writer used cluster random sampling to take the sample. The total number of members of the population is 149 students. They were distributed in four class; A,B,C,D. The writer took class B and the number of members of sample in class B is 30 Students. The data were gathered through the reading test. The reseacher limited her research to comprehend figurative language; Simile, Metaphore, Personofication, Hyperbole, and Onomatipoeia as found in some short stories. From the result of the study, the researcher found that the ability of the third year students of FKIP UIR in generally was maderate (53.3%). In specific, their ability in comprehending simile was moderate (63.3%), their ability in comprehending metaphore was moderate (63.3%), their ability in comprehending personification was moderate (66.7%), their ability in comprehending hyperbole was moderate (70%), their ability in comprehending onoatopoeia was moderate (56.7%). Therefore, by knowing the st udents’ ability to comprehend figurative language found in some short stories, the lecturers are suggested to give more exercise especially in comprehending figurative language and introduction to Litarature and reading comprehension subject the lecturer is expected to give more material about figurative language and motivation in order to improve the ability of the students in comprehending figurative language. For students, they are suggested to do more exercise related with figurative language in literary work and the students have to study effectively and looking for the best way to mativate them to comprehend figurative language as a part of literary work. They can add their knowledge in reading literary work, especially fiction stories.

  Introduction

  The people use figuratively for reason politeness, and to express the ideas that they are difficult to communicate using literal language and to express though in compact and vivid manner. Sometimes the people are not aware that they use figurative language in their communication. In the fiction story, especially in short story figurative language is often used. The student like to read fiction fiction story because the imagined story is interested them. Many expressions in the story contain figurative language. It allows the writer to communicate the meaning that are different from various ways from what the literary say. In addition, figurative languages often appear in the students’ favorite story. So it is necessary to the students to understand more about figurative language.

  Based on writers’ interview to some of the third year students of FKIP Islamic University of Riau, she found that they had studied about figurative language in introduction to literature subject. Some of them still complained that they have difficulties in comprehending figurative language in poetry or story and get unsatisfying grade in the subject.

  Concerning with explanation above, the writer was interested in investigating the third year students’ ability of the English Department of FKIP Islamic University of Riau to comprehend figurative language found in some short stories. In this research, the writer chose three stories that contain figurative language; they are snow White, Cinderella, and the clever slave. The writer chose these stories because, these stories are interested, easy to understand, familiar and entertain the reader.

  Methodology

  The design of this research was descriptive in nature, Gay (1987:189) states that descriptive study involves colletting data in order to answer the question concerning to the status of the subject of the study. It also involves the description, and analysis and interpretation of condition that now exist (Best, 1997:15). This research seeks to find the answer to question through the analysis variable relationship (Best, 1997:145). Related to this theory, the writer conducted this research to describe students’ ability to comprehend figurative language found in some short stories.

  Participant

  In this research the writer took one class to be the sample of this research randomly. In choosing the samples, the writer used four small papers. She wrote A, B, C, and D. And get class B as a sample in this research, the total was the sample 30 students in class. Cluster random sampling was used because the students were distributed in to group. Cluster random sampling is the process of selecting sample in such a way that all individuals in the defined population have an equal and independent chance of being selected for the sample. The writer used this technique because all members of the population were considered homogenous; having the same curriculum, material, and taught by the same lectures.

  Instruments

  The research instrument was multiple coice test that consist of 30 items which are shared in 3 reading test.

  Data Collection Procedure

  To collect the data, the writer administered the test. She prepared a test in type of multiple choice. The students gave 30 questions, the text time allotment for the test was 90 minutes after that the writer collected the data. The writer analyzed the students’ answer by giving the score. To do this, writer follows the following step. First, the writer made the key to answer in order to identify the correct answer. Next the writer identified the correct answer. The grade of students describes their ability to comprehend figurative language from some short stories.

  Results and Discussion

  6. After analyzing the data, she found in comprehending simile in some short stories , 16.7% students got moderate, 63.3% students got moderate, and 20% students got low ability.

  This findings indicates that students’ mastering on comprehending simile is still far from the expectation. On the other hand, it shows that students still have problem or difficulties in comprehending simile. It is indicated by students answer on question “when they look at a bed, they found snow-white past sleep,lying there like an angel in the night, the sentence above mean?” she found only 13 student of 30 students can answer correctly and the question “whenever she wished for anything, the dove would drop it like an egg upon the ground, the sentence a bove means?” she found only 19 students of 30 students can answer correctly. Based on this research, the students need to improve their knowledge and understanding to comprehend about simile.

  1. Students’ Ability to comprehend Metaphore Found in Some short Stories

  Figurative language metaphore was distributed on number items 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, After analyzing the data she found in comprehending metaphore in some short stories, 13.4% students got high ability, 63,3% students got moderate, and 23.3% students got ability.

  This findings indicates that students’ mastering on comprehending metaphore is still far from the expectation. On the other hand, it shows that students still have problem or difficulties to comprehend metaphore. It is indicated by students answer on question “They are two dolls in a museum case means?” she found only 14 students of 30 students can answer correctly and the question “the black jack heart means?” she found only 14 of 30 students can answer correctly. Based on this research, the students need to improve their knowledge and understanding to comprehend about metaphore.

  2. Students’ Ability to comprehend Personification Found in Some short Stories

  Figurative language personification was distributed on number items 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. After analyzing the data, she found in comprehending personification in some short stories, 20% students got high ability, 66,7% students got moderate, and 13,3% students got low ability.This findings indicates that students’ mastering on comprehending personification is still far from expectation.

  On the other hand, it shows that students still have problem or difficulties to comprehend personification. It is indicated by students’ answer question “The sky was dark and the sun decided to slee p, the sentence above means?” she found only 15 students of 30 students can answer correctly and the question “The wind sang her mournful song thourgh the falling leaves. What thing is compared as human action

  inte sentencee above?” she found only 12 students need to improve their knowladge and understanding to comprehend about personification.

  3. Students’ Ability to comprehend Hyperbole Found in Some short Stories

  Figurative language hyperbole was distributed on number items 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24. After analyzing the data, she found in comprehending hyperbole in some short stories, 20% students got high ability, 70 % students got moderate, and 10% students low ability. This findings indicated that students mastering on comprehending personification is still far from expectation. On the other hand, it shows that students still have problem or difficulties to comprehend hyperbole. It is indicated by students’ answer question “i have told you thousand times, the sentence above means?” she found only 12 students of 30 students can answer correctly and the question “She felt if there was fire in her throat means?” she found only 12 students of 30 students can answer correctly. Based on this research, the writer assumed the students need to improve their knowladge and understanding to comprehend about hyperbole.

  4. Students’ Ability to comprehend Onomatopoeia Found in Some short Stories

  Figurative language onomatopoeia was distributed on number items 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30. After analyzing the data , she found in comprehending onomatopoeia in some short stories, 16,6%students got high ability, 56,7% students got moderate, and 26.7% students got low ability. This findings indicates that students mastering on comprehending personification is still far from expectation. On the other hand, it shows that students still have problem or difficulties to comprehend hyperbole. It is indicated by students’ answer question “The lion roar means....?” she found only 13 students of 30 students can answer correctly.

  The question “According to the sentence above, tok...tok...tok... is?” she found only 14 students of 30 students can answer correctly and the question “ poof.....!. she distunguish herself as an old peddler woman, what sound that describing in the sentenc e above?”. She found only 10 students of 30 students can answer correctly. Based on this research, the writer assumed the students need to improve their knowladge and understanding to comprehend about onomatopoeia.

  Conclusion

  From the result of the data analysis, the writer makes the conclusion that generally, the ability of the third year students of English Department of FKIP UIR to comprehend Figurative Language found in some short stories was moderate. The data described that there were 16 students (53.3%) had moderate ability to comprehend figurative language found in some short stories, 8 students (26,7 %) had high ability and 6 students (20 %) had low ability. In detailed, their ability as follows:

  1. The ability of the third year students of English Depatment of FKIP UIR to comprehend simile found in some short stories was moderate because there were 19 students (63.3 %) from 30 students had moderate ability.

  2. The ability of the third year students of English Department of FKIP UIR to comprehend metaphore found in some short stories was moderate because there were 19 students (63.3 %) from 30 students had moderate ability.

  3. The ability of the third year students of English Department of FKIP UIR to comprehend personification found in some short stories wsa moderate because there were 20 students (66.7 %) from 30 students had moderate ability.

  4. The ability of the third year students of English Department of FKIP UIR to comprehend hyperbole found in some short stories was moderate because there were 21 students (70 %) from 30 students had moderate ability.

  5. The ability of the third year students of English Department of FKIP UIR to comprehend Onomatopoeia found in some short stories was moderate because there were 17 students (56.7 %) from 30 students had moderate ability.
