CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION
This chapter presents a conclusion of the results of the study based on the research
questions as formulated. This chapter is then subdivided into two smaller sections,
namely a conclusion and a recommendation related to the future study.
5.1 Conclusion
This study aims to investigate the representation of the conflict between KPK and
POLRI in the President’s speech and to reveal the ideology underlying the
representation. The problem examined in this study is how the conflict between
KPK and POLRI is represented and what the ideology behind the President’s
speech is. This study is largely qualitative. The data are the expressions contained
in the speech. Data are analysed based on the socio-cognitive approach to CDA
proposed by van Dijk (2008).
With regard to the first research question, it is found the dispute between KPK and
POLRI was represented by the President as the collective responsibilities for
Indonesian. This is further indicated as a strategy used by the President to solve
the conflict. Moreover, the conflict was also seen as a political crisis which, again,
not only blackened the reputation of the President, but also destroyed the
existence of KPK as the one and only institution established by the President
himself to fight the corruption in Indonesia.
With regard to the second research question, it is found that the President
demeanour reflects a social democracy due to his egocentric demenaour that leads
to the individualism. The study revealed that the President shows a partiality
towards the conflict. Instead of showing his impartial standpoint upon the conflict,
the President prudently made a stand against POLRI and thoroughly endorsed
KPK in enforcing the law.

The study also found that the President made a speech as a tool to restore his
“damaged” reputation due to the public’s consideration of his inactivity in
resolving the conflict between KPK and POLRI. Therefore, satisfying the
people’s demand is considered to be the most effective way yet.
5.2 Recommendation
Based on the results of the present study, some suggestions are proposed,
especially for the purpose of further study. First, this study only focuses on the
representation of something in a speech. Further studies may include other types
of texts such as news reports, academic texts, or even literary works.
Second, this study only uses a text to analyse (one written text of the speech). It is
then recommended to use more data of analysis. Furthermore, analysing by using
a non-verbal interaction as body language and facial expressions are also
recommended to get more explicit and credible results of the study.
