What surprised me most was the "easy come, easy go" attitude toward basics like blankets, clothing, and other necessities. Although the author begs us repeatedly to help out "dirty kids," I am less likely to hand out blankets, knowing they will probably end up rotting in a forest somewhere. Still, I am grateful to this book for inside information about the homeless problem. I hope that it persuades some young person experiencing hard times that abandoning possessions and hitting the road is not the answer. While I think most Americans, including myself, own way too much stuff, this book has convinced me that I really wouldn't want to own just the contents of a backpack and the clothes on my back.
