I did my apprenticeship at FFF Photography which is located at Jl. Terusan
Sutami no. 20, Bandung, as an assistant to the photographer and as one of the
editors. In this studio, I could apply my English skills in several aspects, among
which are reading, listening, writing, and translating skills. It was my reason to take
this company to be the place of my apprenticeship.
“FFF Photography” is a business in photography and photograph editing. It
has been growing since 2006. This studio did not grow as it should be at the
beginning, but it began to grow about six months ago because the owner of FFF
Photography learned photography in Darwis Triadi School of Photography (DTSoP),
Jakarta. FFF Photography is a business which gets its customers from friends or
relatives because this studio is still new and its name is not known yet by the public.
FFF Photography has several requirements for an assistant of the
photographer and an editor, such as:

Having high creativity and loyalty
Being able to work as a team
Being able to use English orally and especially writing sentences in English that
are used in editing process

The routine activities I did during my apprenticeship at FFF Photography are:

Helping with photography sessions in the studio and also outdoor
I started my apprenticeship on July, 23rd 2007, and ended it on September,
14th 2007. I did my apprenticeship in different time everyday because my schedule
and the owner’s schedule did not match. Besides the schedule, my working places
are different everyday. The following is my working time and place in general:

During my apprenticeship, I always looked for, copied and retyped many
sentences in English that were used in photo editing process. Besides looking for
inspiring words or romantic sentences in various articles from the Internet,
magazines, and books, I also made many sentences by my own creativity as given
in the appendix. Another job that I did during my apprenticeship was in designing
and editing photographs, helping with photography sessions, and preparing the tools
for the photography sessions.
I face several difficulties during my apprenticeship. I got my biggest
difficulties in first day of my apprenticeship. I had to understand and had to learn
photography jargons such as shutter speed, trigger, fill in, main light, patch,
marquee, lasso, crop, etc, which were very different from everyday’s English and I

had to learn them from the experts. Working as an assistant of the photographer and
an editor is not as easy as it looks. I have to learn much more about photography
jargons above and how to use the tools that support my job.
During my apprenticeship, the dominating English skills are reading, writing,
and translating. Reading skills are used in reading articles from many media such as
the Internet, books, magazines, etc. Writing skills are used in making sentences to
be added to photographs, such as given in the Appendix. Translating skills are used
in translating some Indonesian sentences into English to be added to a photograph
such as given in the Appendix.
There are several courses that I took in D3 English Program that are useful
during my apprenticeship, especially Reading, Listening, Translation, and Emotional
Intelligence in the Workplace. Reading skills that I got from the Reading classes
were useful when I look for articles from many media such as the Internet, books,
and magazines. Listening skills that I got from Listening classes are useful when
listening to many songs that have inspiring and romantic sentences to be used in
photograph editing process. Emotional skills that I got from the Emotional
Intelligence in the Workplace class are useful when I have to interact with people
who are customers of FFF Photography because I always have to give good
impression to them.
After my two-month apprenticeship in FFF Photography, I learn about my
strengths and weaknesses in using English based on my supervisor’s evaluation. My
strengths in English are in listening and translating. My supervisor thinks that my
strength in listening is very useful when I have to listen to people who speak English
and Indonesian and a song. I can understand the sentences that I hear well. My
supervisor also thinks that I can translate Indonesian sentences into English

accurately. My supervisor also evaluates the area that I need to improve, which is in
grammar, because I am not really good in arranging sentences using appropriate
English structure and my supervisor really good in grammar. He suggests that I get
an extra lesson for grammar so that my English skills can be perfected.
From my apprenticeship that I did, I can say that I have learned a lot. I learn
much more about professional photography that not all people would know.
Moreover, I gain good experience about doing a real job. The good experiences are
from several aspects that I got from my apprenticeship, such as creativity aspects
that make me more creative in doing my job, communication aspects that help me to
interact with a lot of people, also the aspects of motivation which are very important
in doing my job.
I want to give a suggestion to FFF Photography to increase the use of
English in daily life in the studio. I think it is important for FFF Photography staff to
understand English because most of photography jargons are in English, so that the
staff will have no difficulty in their works. Besides, English language has become an
international language that is used by many countries. The staff and the owner of
FFF Photography need to speak English fluently, so that FFF Photography can enter
the international market.
I suggest that D3 Networking Program maintains this apprenticeship
program. This program helps students to be ready to enter the real working life. I
hope that D3 Networking Program provides much more options of institutions for
apprenticeship, so that students can choose institutions for apprenticeship according
to their talents, criteria, and their interests.
