Human beings communicate one each other with a language. Language is a tool of
communication for people. We can exchange knowledge, declare, feel, beliefs, opinions,
wishes, threats, commands, thanks and promises with a language. We communicate not only
with our local people but also with those international people outside there. For those who
live in different country around the world they communicate with one international language
that is English. In fact, language has played important role in human life. Language can
express everything in people mind by using it. In a language, we will find many kind of
words because the messages of the language is from their words which are delivered by
spoken or written.
There is a word that easily can be familiar with us but its existence and its meaning
are not much given attention in a sentence and even some of us still do not know what kind of
word it is. That word is gerund. Gerund is a verbal that ends in -Ing and functions as a noun.
As college students in English education department. We should master gerund and also its
functions. But the fact of understanding gerund is still low. Therefore the writer would
analyze gerunds in the Sport online articles of The Jakarta Post issued in January-March
2016. The objective of the research is to find out the most used gerund and its functions in the
sport article of the Jakarta Post issued in January- March 2016.
This is the qualitative research. The qualitative research will not give the numeral or
statistic but it depends on the knowledge of researcher to finish the analysis the writer
describes with words in the conclusion and the supported data in tables. The data source was
taken from in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The data are collected from The Jakarta Post sport
articles.
The result of this research shows that there were 42 gerunds found in the Sport articles of the
Jakarta Post Issued in January-March 2016. The total of gerunds are as subject 5 gerunds.
The total of gerunds are as object 3 gerunds. The total of gerunds are as object of preposition
32 gerunds. The total of gerunds are as subject complement 2 gerunds. Gerund as Object of
Preposition is the most used gerund in the Sport articles of The Jakarta Post Issued in
January-March 2016.
Based on the research above, the writer would conclude that there are gerunds found
in the sport articles of The Jakarta Post Issued in January-March 2016. It is suggested for the
lectures and the students to improve their teaching skill using online sport articles of The
Jakarta Post.

Manusia berkomunikasi satu sama lain dengan bahasa. Bahasa adalah alat komunikasi
bagi orang. Kita dapat bertukar pengetahuan, menyatakan, merasa, keyakinan, berpendapat,
berkeinginan, ancaman, perintah, berterima kasih dan membuat janji-janji dengan sebuah
bahasa. Kita berkomunikasi tidak hanya dengan orang-orang lokal, tetapi juga dengan orangorang luar negeri di luar sana. Bagi mereka yang tinggal di negara yang berbeda di dunia.
Mereka berkomunikasi dengan satu bahasa kesatuan internasional yakni bahasa Inggris.
Bahkan, bahasa telah berperan penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Bahasa bisa
mengungkapkan segala sesuatu di pikiran seseorang. Dalam bahasa, kita akan menemukan
banyak jenis kata-kata karena pesan dari bahasa adalah dari kata-kata yang disampaikan
melalui lisan maupun tertulis.
Ada sebuah kata yang memang akrab dengan kita, tetapi keberadaannya dan maknanya
tidak banyak diperhatian dalam sebuah kalimat dan bahkan sebagian dari kita masih belum
tahu apa kata itu. Kata itu adalah gerund. Gerund adalah verbal yang berakhir di -ing dan
fungsi sebagai kata benda. Sebagai mahasiswa di jurusan pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Kita
harus menguasai tentang gerund dan juga fungsinya. Tapi faktanya, pemahaman gerund
masih rendah. Oleh karena itu penulis akan menganalisis gerund di Sport artikel olahraga di
The Jakarta Post edisi bulan Januari-Maret 2016. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk
mengetahui penggunaan gerund yang paling banyak digunakan dan fungsinya dalam artikel
olahraga di Jakarta Post yang diterbitkan di edisi bulan Januari-Maret 2016.
Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian kualitatif tidak akan memberikan
angka atau statistik tetapi itu tergantung pada pengetahuan peneliti untuk menyelesaikan
analisis penulis menjelaskan dengan kata-kata Dalam kesimpulan dan datanya didikung
dalam tabel. Sumber data diambil dari artikel olahraga online di The Jakarta Post edisi bulan
Januari-Maret 2016. Data-data dikumpulkan dari artikel olahraga The Jakarta Post edisi bulan
Januari-Maret 2016. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 42 gerund ditemukan
dalam artikel olahraga di Jakarta Post edisi bulan Januari-Maret 2016. Jumlah gerund sebagai
subjek berjumlah 5 gerund. Jumlah gerund sebagai objek ada 3 gerund. Jumlah gerund
sebagai objek preposisi ada 32 gerund. Jumlah gerund sebagai pelengkap subjek ada 2
gerund. Dan gerund sebagai Objek Preposisi adalah gerund paling digunakan dalam artikel
olahraga The Jakarta Post edisi bulan Januari-Maret 2016
Berdasarkan penelitian di atas, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa ada gerund yang ditemukan
dalam artikel olahraga The Jakarta Post edisi bulan Januari-Maret 2016. Sarankan untuk
Mahasiswa dan Dosen untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan mengajar mereka
menggunakan artikel olahraga online The Jakarta Post.
