The Causes and Effects of Parent Who Stays in 2-3 Class at Tumble Tots.

ABSTRACT

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
These days, mastering English is very important, this is the reason why
today there are many schools and even pre-schools that teach and use

English as their language of instruction. Parents realize the importance of
mastering English for their children’s future.
As a consequence, many parents send their children to pre-schools
these days. According to Baby Center Medical Advisory Board, pre-school
is a place where the children find a wide variety of fun activities, including
singing, dancing, arts and crafts, storytelling, free play, and both indoor
and outdoor games and projects, designed to teach children different skills.
It is also said that children in pre-school have the opportunity to socialize
with other kids as their age (1). Moreover, Indrariawan says “pre-school
will also improve children’s self-confidence and their social skill. Preschool also improves children’s gross and fine motor skills” (4).

There are many pre-schools in Bandung. One of them is Tumble Tots. I
chose Tumble Tots as my internship place because I know that Tumble
Tots is a good pre-school in Bandung because Tumble Tots has a class
for fine motor skills also, while other pre-schools in Bandung only have a
class for gross motor skills. . Tumble Tots is a franchise from United

Kingdom so I think Tumble Tots has a good educational system to teach
children. Besides developing children’s gross and fine motor skill, Tumble
Tots also improves children’s self confidence and social skills.
In Tumble Tots, there are four groups of classes: Gymbabes, W-2
(walking to two), 2-3 (two to three), and Playgroup. In Gymbabes and W-2
class, children are still accompanied by their parents inside the class.
However, in 2-3 class, it is suggested that parents leave their children by
themselves so as to improve children’s self-confidence and social skills.
To leave children inside the class without parent’s accompanied needs
a process. Based on my experience, during the process children will cry
and vomit. The process requires understanding from the parents.
Unfortunately, not all parents understand this. They try leaving their
children inside the class without accompanying but when their children
start crying and vomiting, they will come back to the class. This creates a
problem.

B. Identification of the problem
The problem starts when parents leave their children inside the class
but then come back into the classroom when their children start crying or
vomitting. Based on my experience, this brings an effect on the children’s
emotions and their activities in class. So in this term paper I want to
identify:

Why do parents not want to leave their children inside class without
accompanying them?

What are the effects if parents do not realize the importance of
leaving their children alone inside the class?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
At the end of this term paper, I want to know about factors that cause
some parents to not want to leave their children inside the class without
their presence. I will also give some solutions so that Tumble Tots will be

able to inform the parents who do not understand about the situation. For
parents, they will know what the effects will be if they still stay inside the
class. For me, as a Tumble Tots teacher, I will also know what to do if the
parents still want to stay with their children in class.
D. Description of the Institution

3

Maranatha Christian University

Tumble Tots was founded by Bill Cosgrave, an ex English Olympic
Gymnastic coach, in 1979. Tumble stands for tumbling and Tots stands for
children. So, Tumble Tots means children who are tumbling with physical
activity so they can have self-confidence, have self-esteem, and can
cooperate with others. That is why Tumble Tots has “Skills For Life” as
their motto.
Tumble Tots has programs that are specially formed to develop
children’s gross and fine motor skills and it uses English as its language.
Until now, Tumble Tots has many branches in the world, such as in
Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

In Bandung, Tumble Tots has two branches. One is in Jalan Maulana
Yusuf and the other one is in Jalan Buah Batu. Below are the programs in
Tumble Tots:
1. Gymbabes
Gymbabes is a Tumble Tots program for babies from six months to
walking stage. By having parent involvement, gymbabes helps to stimulate
and encourage babies to use all their senses, gently and without pressure.
2. W-2
This program is for children who can walk confidently. By parental
participation, the confident walker is now encouraged to climb, jump, roll,

and do other elementary physical activities that help stimulate body
awareness.
3. 2-3
This program is for children at the age of two until three. This program
encourages children to climb, jump, and roll, and do in-class activities by

themselves, without parent involvement in class.

4. Playgroup
Children are supposed to have self-confidence here and be more
independent.
E. Limitations of the Study
The limitation of my study is 2-3 year old children in Tumble Tots
whose parents still stay inside the class. I will not discuss about how to
handle the children but how to make parents know the importance of
leaving their children inside the class. I will also do an interview of some
teachers and parents to complete my data.
F. Organization of the Term Paper

5

Maranatha Christian University

This term paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the
Introduction and is divided into six parts. The first part is Background of
the Study. In Background of the Study, I explain why I choose this topic for

my term paper. The second part is Identification of the Problem, I will
identify my problems here. The third part is Objectives and Benefits of the
Study. In this part, I explain the advantages of my analysis in this term
paper for the institution, for the readers, and for me. The fourth part is a
Description of the Institution, which gives the history of the institution and
describes about the institution. The fifth part is Limitations of the Study. It
explains the limitations of my research and the process of gathering data.
The last part is about Organization of the Term Paper, which explains the
flow of this term paper. The second chapter of this term paper is Problem
Analysis. In this chapter, I will analyze the factors that cause the problems.
The third chapter is about Potential Solutions. It explains the potential
solutions, with the positive and negative effects for each solution. The last
chapter is Conclusion. It states the best solution given for the problem.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

Parents have an important role in their child’s development. They have to
cooperate with the institutions they are related to, which in this term paper is
Tumble Tots, in order to improve the child’s development. Therefore, in this
chapter I want to address the chosen solution for the problem at Tumble Tots.
In the previous chapter I have already mentioned the potential solutions
based on my analysis from the causes and effects of the problem. I think the
best solution for my problem is a combination from both potential solutions
given before.
The chosen solutions are a combination of the first and second solutions.
Before the children move into 2-3 class, the parents are expected to have a
chat with parents whose child is already in 2-3 class. This solution will make
parents understand the importance of leaving their children inside the class
before they move to 2-3 class. Besides that, Tumble Tots has to set a clear
rule about the 2-3 class. For those who want to move to 2-3 class, parents
have to leave their children without being accompanied. They are given a
month if they still want to accompany their children inside the class. If in a
month they still cannot leave their child, the child should move back to W-2
class. Based on my experience, parents do not want their children to stay in
13

Maranatha Christian University

W-2 class too long because they want their children to be more independent.
Therefore, this solution will somehow force parents to leave their children
without being accompanied.
In conclusion, parents will understand the importance of leaving their
children inside the class. They will see their child’s improvement in the
classroom. If parents do not realize the importance of leaving children inside
the class, their child’s social skills and independence will not improve as well
as those who are already left by parents.
