FACULTIES AND GRADUATE SCHOOL
State University of Malang is home to nine faculties: Faculty of
Education, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of
Sports Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Psychology
Education, and Graduate School (Master's and Doctorate Programs).
LOCATION
The main campus covers an area of 43 hectares (106 acres) located in
the center of Malang city, 90 kilometers south of Surabaya, the capital
city of East Java Province. Beside this main campus, there are also
other campuses at the outskirts of Malang and in Blitar, which is 80
kilometers to the west. Malang is the second largest city in East Java.
The city covers an area of 110,6 square kilometers with a population of
±857.891. It is a well-planned inland city, where the fertile slopes of two
groups of volcanoes meet. It has a pleasant mild climate with a
temperature range of 20°-29°C.
HISTORICAL DATES
State University of Malang is one of the oldest universities in East Java.
It was officially founded on October 18, 1954 as PTTG Malang (Malang
Teacher's College) by the late Mr. Mohammad Yamin, who then was
Minister of Education and Culture. In 1967 it was designated as a
Growth Center University by the Director General of Higher Education
and in 1968 it opened its first Doctorate Program. The English
Department of State University of Malang was once recognized by the
Ford Foundation as the best of its kind in South East Asia.

LIBRARY
The library includes the Main Library,
the Graduate School Library, and the
Primary School Teacher Education
Library. The Main Library holds
approximately 132.802 volumes,
consisting of some 55.825 titles. The
collection includes books, periodicals,
research reports, dissertations,
government publications, and microforms.
PUBLICATIONS
State University of Malang home is to a number of journals which
publish articles and research reports in various fields. The publishing
house in the university is a member of the Association of Indonesian
Publishers. It publishes textbooks for elementary, junior, and senior
high schools, and also for universities. Some of the books published by
State University of Malang Press are recommended by the government
for use across the country.
ENROLLMENT
State University of Malang is a medium sized university in Indonesia.
The current students enrollment is 32,820, consisting of 774 in the
diploma programs (associate degree), 28,712 undergraduate (Sarjana)
students and 3,334 graduate students. The ratio of teaching staffs to
students is 1:31.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
State University of Malang hosts a significant number of international
students enrolled in the undergraduate (Sarjana) and graduate
programs. The Center for the Indonesian Studies at State University of
Malang offers a special program in the Indonesian language and culture
for foreign students. Course credits taken at State University of Malang
are recognized in a number of universities in the United States,
Australia, China, Kamboja, Slovakia, Ukrania, Thailand, Myanmar,
Uzbekistan, Uganda, Mozambiq, Madagaskar, South African.
