CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

There are several types of literary work that we can use to describe many
things that happen in our daily life, such as drama, poetry, novel and film. There are
several ways to understand drama, including watching a drama performance in
theater or reading the text. The text of drama has some elements to help
understanding it. Drama is always associated with the dialogue and action. Each
author has his own style to define the term, therefore, the definition of drama
according to some authors, will be different. One of them is Peacock's (1957:158)
drama theoretical definition is “there must be an action; that is, events and situations
must be presented with accompanying tension, sudden changes and a climax. There
must be central meaning, whether religious, moral, emotional or psychological, which
strikes home to the spectator's head and heart”. That means the definition of drama to
concentrate more on the form of drama when he said that it should consist of acts,
events, situations, tension, climax and theme.
One of the elements in drama that related to plot is conflict, conflict is the
essence of dramatic story telling. Analyzing the conflict in the drama requires some
basic ideas as tools to investigate and reveal the conflict. According to James L.
Potter (1967:25), the activation of the conflict begins with, develop existing conflict,

interesting to analyze the conflict in some of drama.
The Lion King written by three people such as Irene Mecchi, is known for her
work on The Lion King (1994), Jonathan Roberts, best known for having co-written
Disney's The Lion King (1994) and Linda Woolverton who wrote the screenplay of
The Lion King (1994). The first, two writers tackled the difficult unresolved

emotional issues in the script, and also added more comedy relief which created
Timon, Pumbaa, and the hyenas. One touch in the story, Irene added the moment
when Rafiki hits Simba's head after the visitation of his father. Jonathan Roberts also
helped to create and define personalities for the characters and Linda Woolverton,
wrote several early drafts of a script.
In general, The Lion King is a story with a lot of conflicts, which make the
writer is very interesting to find, both in terms of friendship, family, love, leadership,
self-confidence and so on. Therefore the writer interested to find some of the conflicts
especially the internal conflict from Simba that occur in the story to find a theme that
could summarize in a message. The Lion King is the first Disney animated feature is
not based on the story. In another sense, it is based on half the story in classical
mythology. The Lion King tells the story of the birth, childhood and adulthood
eventually Simba, a lion. The birth of lionet was announced at the beginning of the
opening of the story, called The Circle of Life which is also the additional point is
combined with the collaboration of music and animation to show all the animals
African desert to greet their future king, Roger Ebert(1994).

The study of theme and conflict, is expected to provide an understanding to

find the theme of the story is based on the internal conflicts of Simba presented.
Reading the script drama has its own interests in which the reader is required to be
able to imagine and envision how about events that has happened without the help of
direct scenes like watching the drama in theater. Therefore, the interesting part is to
see the theme presented in the story by the internal conflict in the drama of The Lion
King. The writer finds that the theme can be found through internal conflict after
reading the drama script The Lion King. So the theme can be analyzed based on the
internal conflict faced by Simba in drama script The Lion King.
