Techniques on How To Develop Discipline Effectively To The Early Aged Children At Kids2success.

ABSTRACT

Disiplin sangat penting bagi semua orang, terutama bagi anak-anak
usia dini.
and reward” dan metode pendekatan diri. Solusi-solusi tersebut sangat
baik dalam mengajarkan dan menerapkan disiplin kepada anak-anak usia
dini dan tentunya tidak melukai mereka secara fisik maupun mental.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Education is very important for everyone. A good education depends
on many aspects, one of them is discipline. Discipline must be started at
the early age, so that discipline can be implanted in lives. Therefore,
discipline is very important for the early aged children. Early aged children
need discipline to build their characteristics and personality. Without
discipline, the children will grow up with bad characteristics and bad
personality which will make them become people without a bright future.
Early aged children, which are 3 until 7 years old children show their
indiscipline in many ways. Based on my experience while teaching in
KIDS2SUCCESS at Taman Kopo Indah, some of them show their
indiscipline by shouting while studying, playing around in the class, and
not being able to concentrate well while studying. Consequently, the way I
develop discipline at the early aged children has to be creative and I also

have to be patient in order not to harm them mentally or psychically.

In this case, I choose KIDS2SUCCESS for my internship place,
because I know that KIDS2SUCCESS is a high-quality English study
centre for children from 3 until 15 years old. Besides teaching
English, KIDS2SUCCESS also improves the children’s intelligence,
emotion, creativity, and discipline.

B. Identification of the Problem
Developing discipline is a challenge to the teacher. Moreover, there are
still some problems in developing discipline to children at
KIDS2SUCCESS. The problems are:
1. How to develop discipline effectively to the early aged children?
2. What are the correct techniques to develop discipline to the early
aged children?
3. What are the reasons that we should develop discipline to the early

aged children?

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
C.1. Objectives of the Study
The first objective of the study is to find the suitable ways to develop
discipline to the early aged children in order to adapt discipline in their
lives. The second objective of the study is to observe how the “stick and
reward”, personal approach and spanking can develop the children’s
discipline. The third objective of the study is to find the best solution to
grow discipline in the early aged children.

C.2. Benefits of the Study
C.2.1. For the Institution
The benefits for the institution are to build the harmony and the
comfortable situation of teaching and learning in KIDS2SUCCESS at
Taman Kopo Indah. Moreover, it is expected to improve the quality and

services in KIDS2SUCCESS at Taman Kopo Indah especially in learning
English as a foreign language.

C.2.2 For the Readers
The benefits for the readers are that this term paper can be a guideline
for the parents and the teachers to develop discipline to the early aged
children in order to make them understand about the importance of
discipline to the early aged children. I really expect that this paper can help
to develop discipline of the children effectively.

C.2.3. For Myself
The benefit for me is that this term paper can help to improve my
knowledge in order to be a better teacher. The efforts of making this paper
push me to discover the new knowledge that I have never known before.

D. Description of the Institution
KIDS2SUCCESS is a franchise of an education institution in America,
which has a program to teach English as an international language and as
a self-development program to children from 3 until15 years old.

KID2SUCCESS was established in 1997 in America and the first
Indonesian branch was opened in Jakarta in 2002. In 2006,
KIDS2SUCCESS opened their branches in Bandung. The first branch was
located at komplek Setrasari, while the second was at Taman Kopo Indah
II blok IIA/55. KIDS2SUCCESS at Taman Kopo Indah was started by Mrs.
Erni Kosasih and then replaced by Mrs. Cynthia from January 2008 until
the present time. In teaching English, KIDS2SUCCESS always wants to
give the best not only for the students, but also for the teachers. In order to
be up-to-date, effective, full of fun and also to improve the quality of the
teaching and learning process, KIDS2SUCCESS is using high
technological equipments to teach English by using computer, projector,
and mimio (touch screen). Moreover, the curriculum was designed to
improve the intelligence, emotion, creativity and discipline of the children.

E. Method of the Study
In this term paper, I will discuss the techniques on how to develop

discipline effectively to children from 3 until 7 years old. I have already
done some observation while doing the internship in KIDS2SUCCESS at
Taman Kopo Indah. While I did the internship, I found lots of information
that could help me to write this paper. Besides the data from
KIDS2SUCCESS and theories from the books, I also browse the internet
to collect the information.

F. Limitation of the Study
I will focus my analysis on the techniques on how to develop discipline
effectively to children from 3 until 7 years old and the average number of
students in one class is 1 up to 5 students. The analysis is based on my
internship program as a teacher from 2 July 2008 until 30 August 2008 in
KIDS2SUCCESS at Taman Kopo Indah II blok II A/55.

G. Organization of the Term Paper
This term paper starts with the Abstract, The content of which is written

in the entire paper is in Indonesian language. It helps the readers to know
the whole content of term paper promptly. The Declaration of Originality
has the substance of my declaration concerning the originality of the paper
which follows the Abstract. After that, there is the Acknowledgements
which contains my gratitude to the people who was involved and
supported me in the process of making this term paper.
After that, there is the Table of Contents, following four chapters:
Chapter I

The introduction of the topic

Chapter II

The analysis of cause and effect of the problems

Chapter III

The possible solutions of its positive and negative
effect

Chapter IV

The best solutions of the problems and the reasons.

In the last part, I present the Bibliography which contains the reference
sources from Chapter I up to Chapter IV.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

Developing discipline to the early aged children is not easy. The right
techniques should be carefully selected and implemented. After discussing
all the potential solutions for the problem together with its potential positive
and negative effect in the previous chapter, I would like to describe two
solutions to the problem. From the three chosen solutions, I think the best
ones are solution one and three which are personal approach and “stick

and reward”.
I decide to choose solution one and three because they are very
effective and flexible to any age of children. By personal approach, we can
build trust between the children and the teacher through the
communication. With good communication between both sides, I am sure
that the children will listen to the teacher and do the teacher’s order which
will help to grow discipline to the children. This solution was supported by
the theories from Carrol, Reid, and Moline. They say that with
communication any problem can be solved.

Moreover, through the “stick and reward” children can learn between the
right and wrong. If the children do the right thing they will receive the
“reward” which is “stamp” (stamp is kind of reward in KIDS2SUCCESS),
or the better reward is a kind of appreciation from the teacher of a loving
“thank you” of what they do. On the other hand, if they do the wrong
thing, they will receive the “stick” which is the punishment. Moreover, the

punishment is not the one which can harm the physic or mental of the
children, but the one that can make them understand that what they do is
wrong. The example of punishment is when the children do not pay
attention during the learning process and the children cannot answer
what have been taught, the children will not get stamps as their reward of
their performance in class. Moreover, with “stick and reward”, children will
be able to implant the discipline on their life by their own. This solution
was supported from my own experience and some theories from Banks
(par. 6), Haiken (par. 44), and Peter (par. 4).
As the conclusion, I can say that the chosen solutions of personal
approach and “stick and reward” can help me growing discipline in the
early aged children in KIDS2SUCCESS at Taman Kopo Indah.
