THE MEMBERSHIPPING STRATEGIES OF THE INDONESIAN 4TH GRADE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN CODE-SWITCHING PHENOMENON: A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY.

ABSTRACT

This thesis is entitled “The Membershipping Strategies of the
Indonesian 4th Grade Elementary Students in Code-Switching Phenomenon:
A Sociolinguistic Study”. The object of this thesis is the conversations of the
Indonesian 4th grade students that content with membershipping strategies. In this
study, the Indonesian 4th grade students’ conversations are considered as the codeswitching phenomenon because when they try to show their strategies, the
Indonesian 4th grade students switch from their first language to English. Their
first language refers to Indonesian language. The thesis aims to analyze and
describe the function of code-switching to English used by the Indonesian 4th
grade students in their conversations. The method used in this research is a
descriptive analysis. The present writer collects the data related to the thesis,
classifies and analyzes them based on the theories used in this research. The result
shows that there are several strategies found in the Indonesian 4th grade students’
conversations. They are prototypical forms, domain specific-discourse, indirect
strategies, keeping your options open, verification and multiple choice. Those
strategies occur in code-switching affecting to the several factors. They are topic,
relationship status, and function or goal.
