REMARKS

Communication and media across the years have experienced an astounding
development, either on its theoretical, methodological or practical aspects. The latest
of these developments in the communication arena, the New Media, have since its
births given rise to new perspectives on the role of communication in society. Recent
descriptions and research results of the internet and other digital media have セィッキョ@
.
them to be new resources for the enhancement of public participation in politics,
economics, as well as culture. Along with the development of the media available for
use by the people over the years, came also the thoughts of not only their benefits,
but also their shortcomings for the lives of the people. These developments have
given the idea to scholars and those others interested about communication and
media about the different kinds of social interactions that humans can practice:
through direct face to face, through the technically means of analog communication,
and through the digitally technological means for networked communication either
one to one, one to many, or many to many. It is these last ways of communication
that people conduct today what this conference is all about.
The Department of Communication, as a part of the Faculty of Social and

Political Sciences, University of Indonesia is offering this conference as a sor1 of
common meeting ground for scholars, students, researchers, and others working in
government offices, the media and communication technology, both on local and
international sites, to think and discuss about the kind of future we will all be facing in
the advent of the new communication and information technology. Topics discus:er.:
in the conference will advance our knowledge and understanding of the phenomena
in today's digital communication context.
It is the first international conference ever conducted by the Department
linked to the commemoration of its 50th anniversary - but certainly not to be the last,
because we hope in optimism to see its continuation on a regular basis in the years
ahead. As host of the conference, we welcome you all participants and hope to see
you enjoy the dynamics and bustle of our capital city, Jakarta!
