CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A.

Background of the Study
Development of Education depends on its human resource. Education is
used to create a smart and democratic society. If we want to improve our human
resource, we should make a change and improvement in our education system
including changing the curriculum. It is the reason that our government applied
a new curriculum.
Nowadays, English is introducing in elementary school curriculum.
English has been one subject as local content for elementary school. It is based
on the Decree of Ministry of Education and Culture No. 060/V/1993, which is
stated that English may be given to elementary school students as a local
content.
In elementary school teacher must give a lot of attention to the students
because children can learn better than adult. Ur (1996: 286) states that young
children learn language better than older ones; children learn better than adults.
Children are easier to absorb new materials even they are easy to forget too. It
needs to repeat the lesson all the time. Looking at the phenomena above, the

teacher should creates new ideas of various teaching technique and learning
strategy to avoid boring situation and make the students interested in the

material, they are not easy to forget and enjoy it. Many teaching techniques
have ever been applied such as using method such as games, song, outdoor
activities, cards etc. In fact, it is not easy to deliver vocabulary to young learner.
It is caused by the students them selves, such as they do not have motiva tion;
they are afraid and bored to study English, not only they have limited time in
English lesson, but also less practice in real situation.
Vocabulary is one of the subjects taught when students are learning a
language. By using teaching aids, it will be suitable and helpful for them to
learn vocabulary. Students are easy to get the material better. There are many
kinds of aids or tools for teaching the young learners.
Pictures are really handy resource to have and can be useful at every
stage of the class. There are many strategies that can be applied from pictures as
teaching aids. The strategies will be interesting for students. Pictures will make

students learn better and more quickly. This research is done to give an
alternative in teaching English. The writer creates an active learning situation by
using teaching aids. The problems are found in this research is to avoid bored
situation from teaching learning process using verbal explanation methods.
In this school the children bored with the method using by the teacher.
The teacher gives verbal explanation in almost material. The teacher often gives
an examination, it is to know how far they absorb the previous materials. They
have limited time and less practice in real situation also have no efforts and lazy

to open dictionary. It caused they have low motivation to create themselves
practice English in real situation. When the teacher gives students an exercises
they always asked to the teacher, because they have not enough memory
without read their notes. It is the problem for the teacher if the students always
depend to teacher to solve the problems. The writer find new technique to solve
it, finally pictures is chooses in this research. The writer thinks that there are
many strategies can applied by using pictures as teaching aids. From this the
writer is interest to conduct a research about ”IMPROVING STUDENT’S
VOCABULARY BY USING PICTURES AT THE FOURTH YEAR OF

SDN 3 NGABEYAN KARTASURA IN 2007/2008 ACADEMIC YEAR”

Problem Statement
Based on the background of the study, the writer formulates the
problems as follows:
1. How is the implementation of teaching vocabulary using pictures at the
fourth year students of SDN 3 NGABEYAN KARTASURA in 2007/2008
academic year?
2. Does the fourth year student of vocabulary mastery improve?
3. What are the students’ comments on the implementation of teaching
vocabulary using pictures at the fourth year students?

Limitation of the Study
The writer focuses the study on problem of teaching vocabulary and
picture to the fourth year students of SDN 3 NGABEYAN KARTASURA in

2007/2008 academic year.

D.

Objective of the Study
1. To know the implementation of teaching vocabulary using pictures at the
fourth year students of SDN 3 NGABEYAN KARTASURA in 2007/2008
academic year.
2. To know the increasing of students vocabulary mastery at the fourth year
students.
3. To know the students’ comments of teaching vocabulary using pictures at
the fourth year students.

Benefit of the Study
The researcher hopes that the result of this research has some benefits,
especially theoretical and practical benefits.
1. Theoretical Benefit
a. The finding of this research can enrich the theory of teaching English

vocabulary to the Elementary students.

b. The result of the research paper can be used as the reference for those
who want conduct a research in English teaching learning process.
2. Practical Benefit
a. The English teachers can use the result of the research in English
teaching learning process in Elementary School, especially for teaching
vocabulary using pictures.

F.

Research Paper Organization
In order to make the research easy to follow, the writer organizes the
paper as follows:
Chapter I is Introduction. It consists of background of the study,
problem statement, and objective of study, benefit of the study, and research
paper organization.
Chapter II is review of related literature. It deals with previous study,

vocabulary, young learner, and pictures as a media of teaching vocabulary.
Chapter III is research method. It discusses type of research, subject of
the study, object of the study, method of collecting data, and technique for
analyzing data.
Chapter IV is research finding and discussion, then chapter V consists of
conclusion and suggestion.
