FOREWORD BY
DR HASNAH MOHD SIRAT
CHAIRPERSON OF ICNP 2015

PROFESSOR

.' /-, /) rr. r.., /...1rr rt. .. r,.r4- /r,/orr.

It is indeed my great pleasure
participants and delegates

.-,/7;.1,1 r.,

and honour

to welcome all

to the International

Conference on
(ICNP
Natural Products 2015
2015). As the organizer for this year's
ICNP, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is honoured

to host this annual
Products Society (MNPS) that
encourages the involvement of various organizations, especially
those related to research, teaching and learning. My deepest
appreciation goes to all our guest, plenary and invited speakers for
their commitment to participate in this cont-erence and sharing the

experiences and expertise in their respective fields with all the
participants, especially the young researchers. I hope that everyone
will take this opportunity to interact, change of ideas and initiate the
fruitful collaboration, linkages and networking in varieties of issues related to the development
of natural products research areas. In this year conference, we manage to attract scientists from
seventeen countries, with guest speakers [2), plenary and invited speakers (L5), oral presenters
(77), and poster presenters [160). This is a great achievement for these two days conference.

event

of the Malaysian Natural

This conference will act as a platform for academicians, scientists, researchers and students in
the field of natural products to showcase recent research findings involving natural products
research, to exchange ideas and knowledge on the latest development and advancement of
instrumentation employed in natural productslesearch, and to encourage the development of
professional an,/ar.,
First and foremost I would like to take the opportunity to extend
my warm welcome to all the speakers and participants attending
the International Conference on Natural Products 2015 flCNP

2015), organized by the Faculty of Science, UTM with the
cooperation of the Malaysian Natural Products Society (MNPSJ. I
strongly feel that this conference provides the right avenue for
researchers, academic community and students in the region to
share insights and exchange views on the findings of their work and
new discoveries in various aspects of science and technologr of the
Natural Products developmenl This is especially important for
Malaysia as research and development is essential to highlight and
uphold the status of a developed country with naturally existing
biodiversity rich ness.
Intensifoing research development and commercialization is now the focus of Malaysia as it
strives towards becoming a developed nation. The rapidly growing Malaysian industry requires
a community with sound understanding of science and technology to provide the necessary
human capital with the right intellectual capacity, innovative skills and entrepreneurial mindset

that can adapt and embrace the ongoing rapid technological change in a versatile and
resourceful manner. However, for Malaysia to.remain relevant and competitive in this global

it has become more challenging and essential for an institution of higher learning to
provide support for scientific research. Malaysia has copious amount of natural products with

high potentiality of being develop into active ingredients which can be implemented for diverse
applications such as in the pharmaceutical, agriculrural, medicinal and other high-end fields.

arena,

With the cooperation of both the Malaysian Natural Products Society, which offers a unique
plafform, and UTM's research strength and innovation, the conference will act as an impetuJ in
the efforts to establish the links between recent advancernents in the science knowleJge field

and the business industries. Such outcome could create value and oppornrnities for researchers
and their products in benefitting Malaysia's agenda of Bioeconomy. I have always believed that
a technologically literate scientific community with high awareness towards the importance of
the advancement of knowledge and skills related to natural products, is essential foi high value
added enterprises critical to ensure the sustainability in the quality of life with safer, cleaner
and healthier environment.

On that note, I wish all of you a fruitful conference which should not be limited only to
intellectual presentations, but should also be the platform to promote networking and
collaboration amongst researchers and institutions in diverse disciplines. Finally, my heirdelt
appreciation goes to the organizers for their dedication and commitment in ensuring the

success of this symposium, and my best wishes to all participants for an intellectually
stim ulating and memorable conference.

'I'he peel crude exfiacts of thc six typical Malaysian fruits wcre evaluated for their
cytotoxicity, neurotoxicity and neuroprotection activities. Thc selected fruits were
mangosteen, durian, rambutan, dokong, jackfruit and sapodilla. The fmit peels were extracted
using ethanol. Six concentrations of the extracts; 100 pglml, I ng/ml, l0 ng/ml. l0Onglml.
lfrgiml and l0 pgiml were uscd to determine the activities. Cytotoxicity activities werc tested
against SII-SYSY cell line for incuhation 24 hours and 48 hours. Cell viability was asscssed
tbr this test. Mangosteen extract showed significant cytotoxic activity (108.4 % cell viabiliry'l
against S[{-SY5Y cell line for incubation 24 hours whilc iackfruit extract displayed highest
activity {121.2 o/o) for 48 hours incubation. For neurotoxicity test, dokong pccl extract gave
the highest cell viability $A2 o/o) at l0ng/ml, whilc jackfiuit and rambutan produced thc
lowest cell viability (less than 82o/o\ at l0 pg/ml. Neuropnrtection activity u,ere determined
on the peel extract which induced with hydrogen peroxide-indtrced ccll damage (ICso) and
incubated for 24 hours. The results showed durian and dokong (both I ng/ml) presented cell
viability 88 % and 85 7o respectively, which is greater than ICso (50 % cell viability), while
rambutan showed lowest cell viability t42.2o/o) at I pe/ml). The results showed that all of the
crude extracl.s were not toxic to the cells and also possessed newoprotective ell'ect towards
neuronal cells. At low concentration, the fruit peel extract presentcd good neuroprotection
etlect toward SH-SY5Y ccll line.

Physalis minima is an important genus of thc Solanaceae family sontains natural stcroids,
withanolides. The study was to evaluate the effccts of methanolic extract of Ph_vsalis minima
(MEP) on blood pressure and vascular endothelial in ovariectomized rats. Twenty femalc
Wistar rats were subjected to bilateral ovaiiectomy. After fivc weeks, ovariectomized rats
(ovx) were randomly divided intcl five groups, tluee gpoups of ovx rats treated rvith MEP at
dose of 500, 1500, and 2500mg, mg/kgBW, respectively for four weeks, and two group as a
ovariectomized con&ol groups (ovx 5 weeks and 9 wccks). In addition, four female rats
without any treatment were provided as a nonnal group. Systolic hlood pressrue (SBP) was
