Learners in SMK Tarunatama, Getasan
Abstract
This study investigated the foreign language anxiety potential sources among the
11th grade students of SMK Tarunatama, Getasan during the academic year 20112012. The participants consisted of 86 students who completed Indonesian version
of FLCAS (Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope, 1986). While to seek FLA sources, 13
anxious students (7 high-anxious and 6 low-anxious according their FLCAS
scores) were interviewed using Ohata‟s (2005) interview questions. These 13
anxious student answers classified and coded using Young‟s (1991) six potential
anxiety sources. The findings indicated that the FLA tendency was high (80.23%);
i.e. communication apprehension 25.39%, test anxiety 29.60%, fear of negative
evaluation 14.92% and general anxiety of English classes 30.09%. The result of
this study also showed that the participants perceived 3 kinds of potential anxiety
sources i.e. language testing (test anxiety), personal and interpersonal anxieties
(lack of preparation, lack of comprehension, lack of confidence, fear of being
mocked by classmates) and learner belief about language learning (expectation to
get a good grade).
