SUMMARY

Noviana Dwi Puspitasari. A.320.070.039. A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON
TEACHING – LEARNING PROCESS OF READING TO THE FIRST
YEAR STUDENT OF SMP NEGERI 3 COLOMADU IN 2010/2011
ACADEMIC YEAR. Research Paper. Teacher Training and Education
Faculty. Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta: 2011
This study aims at describing the teaching-learning process of reading to
the first year students of SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu in 2010/2011 academic year.
The writer focuses the English teaching-learning process of reading
descriptive text, on the first year students. The purpose of this research is to know the
implementation of teaching reading at the first year students of SMP Negeri 3
Colomadu. The data are taken from all elements of teaching-learning process
committed by the teacher and the students and other sources such as books, students’

worksheet, syllabus, etc. The method of collecting data is descriptive method by
employing interview, analyzing document and observation. This research is
descriptive qualitative research which does not include any calculation or statistic
procedure.
The result of the research shows that the English teacher in SMP Negeri 3
Colomadu applies two approaches in teaching reading, namely bottom-up
approach and top-down approach. The writer finds that from the observation, there
are some problems faced by the students; (1) students’ difficulties in finding the
main idea of descriptive text, (2) most of the students have difficulties in
arranging the sentence correctly, and (3) the students have difficulties in
translating the word from English into Indonesian and Indonesian into English.
During the teaching-learning process from the first meeting until fourth meeting
the response of the students is good. They were enthusiastic in every meeting.
