CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study There are many different problems and challenges from time to time in English teaching and learning process. These problems can disturb the

activities. The sources of problems are caused by some factors. According to Martensi KDJ and Mungin Eddy Wibowo in their book “Identifikasi Kesulitan Belajar”, said: The factors which correlate are internal and external factors.

Internal factors is the factors which rises from the students self. External factor is the factor which rises from the other side of the students.1 The kinds of internal factors are the physical condition, intelligence, skills, ability and interest of students. The kind of external factors are family, school and society. Students’ interest is the internal factor which most correlate in their achievement.

Education is the conscious process of activities. It is given when the students in the growth of physical and spiritual.2 There are two basic components which have influences in teaching and learning process. The two components are teachers and students. The qualities of the teachers have influences in teaching and learning process, but the second components can

1 Tim Pengembangan MKDK IKIP Semarang, Bimbingan Konseling ili Sekolah, IKIP Semarang Press, Semarang, 1989, page 36

2 not be forgotten, the students’ abilities in catching the explanations by teachers are important too. Both components are very important and can not be separated. In the English teaching and learning process, teacher is guidance and teaching learning process will be success if the students more active in the classroom.3 4

5 Today, the national education has new curriculum. In the same time, many students do not pass in national examination. Most of them do not pass in national examination in English subject, especially in listening skill. According to a student of SMA Muhammadiah 1 Salatiga, his listening skill achievement was low, under standard or under 6. According to him listening was difficult subject. E. Hypothesis Sumardi Suryabrata said in his book of “Metodologi Penelitian”.

Hypotesis is unpermanent answers for the problems of research and must be tested again empirically,7 So the hypothesis of the problems are : “They are any correlation between the students’ interest on watching English film and their listening skill achievement”.

  6

F. Methodology of Research

  1. Population and Sample o Population are all of the research subjects. And sample are part of the population which was researched.8

9 The research population is all of the students in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Salatiga 2006 academic years. They are any rules in v taking of sampling. Suharsimi suggests when number of research subjects are more than 100 students, it is taken 10%-15% of the population and when number of research subjects are less then 100 students, it is taken all of them. Because of students in the SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Salatiga 2006 academic year are more then 100 students, it can be taken 10%-15% sample.10 The SMA Muhammadiah 1 Salatiga have 360 students. The writer take 10% of the total students, that are 30 - 40 students. The second v years students of the SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Salatiga are homogen. Number of each class average 40 students. The writer choose one class which to be a sample in this research.

3 In the English subjects, listening skill is the sub subject which was studied alone. Listening skill can not be separated with the other component of the English subject like reading, writing and speaking.

This is the diagram which describe the relationship of listening skill and the other sub subject of English subject.

l2Oxford University, Oxford Learner Pocket Dictionary, Oxford University Press, New

18 When listening to foreigner speaking our language, of having great

difficulty in understanding what they are to trying to say, not because of their lack of knowledge of vocabulary and language structure but because the sound they produced seemed peculiar and the voice rose and feel in unexpected places. Event immigrant who have lived in the country for twenty years may have a “foreign accent” which makes them difficult to understand. Since language is a means of communication, it is not enough for our students to leam word, phrase, grammatical features, if they are not able to produce these in way which makes their utterances comprehensible to a native speaker of the language.

Helping students to acquire an articulation and intonation which are comprehensible and acceptable to native speaker poses one of the most difficult problems for teaching of language. The seriousness of the problem depend on the degree of difference and the nature of the differences between the sound system of the first and the second languages. Similarly, speaker of tone language experience difficulty in learning correct production of notional languages. The carryover of a different stress or intonation system is also a frequent cause of in comprehensible.

Pronunciation problems may be greater that students realize, English for instance, show extreme differences in their phonological system and speakers of either of these languages have considerable difficulty in listening the language without a marked “foreign accent”. Before teacher can overcome

19 E. Media of Listening Skill Listening skill is the sub subject of English subject which need a special rooms in teaching and learning process (language laboratory). In these rooms is completed with special equipment. Language laboratory is a room to training the students in listening and speaking skill of the foreign language.14 The students on the alone seats and in the isolated area. They can be interaction by headphone.

The equipment in the language laboratory are :

  1. Headphone

  2. Emitter

  3. Receiver

  4. Television

  5. Tape recorder

  6. Channel or webs

  7. Cassette or VCD

  8. Video or VCD player

  9. Air conditioner (AC)

  10. Special box (special table) This is the reason, why listening skill need the special rooms in the teaching and learning process.

20 F. Problems and Difficulties of Listening Skill Listening skill subject has many problems and difficulties in teaching and learning process.!:>

  1. The Special Problems The special problems of listening skill is in the discrimination of sound, stress and intonation are discussed. In English language has many word which has a near sound, stress or intonation. Example:

  A B

  Good God No Now

  Moon Month

  Books Box

  Bed Bet To Two

The word above has different meaning, but it has a near sound, stress or intonation. It is clear why the discrimination of sound, stress and intonations was to be the special problem in listening skill.

  2. The Difficulties of Listening Skill There are many difficulties in the teaching and learning skill. The major difficulties for the students are they can not understand what is being said by native speaker or foreigner.

Usually the students get a misunderstanding in listening the native speaker or foreigner. So the massage or some information can not be delivered or catch the students. 1

  5

21 G. Standard Speech of Listening Skill Standard speech is a measurement of speed of speech. Pirn S. Leur,

Han Cock, and Furey studied the speech rate in their research. They drawn the following proposed set at standards for teaching listening skill purpose.

Standards Speech rates : 16 Fast : above 220 wpm

  Moderately fast : 190-220 wpm Average : 160-190 wpm Moderately slow : 130-160 wpm

Slow : below 130 wpm wpm : Word per Minute This standardization is measurement in speed of speech. By it the teacher can make a grouping of the teaching material depend on the level of their students.

H. Listening Skill Test

Listening skill subject would not be complete without looking at the test or exams. The material test is extended oral communication. The extended oral communication are movies or film, radio programs, and TV programs. There are two broad category of test that in cooperate the listening skill. They are aural test simply and listening comprehension test.17

  22

  1. Aural test simply One group of these aural test simply uses listening as a tool to evaluate something else. For instance, in the limited response. It learned how beginners word mastery could be checked by having them listen and respond to a simple command such as “Hand me the chalk”. This listening test was also used as a means of evaluating low level proficiency in grammar and pronunciations.

  2. Listening comprehension test The second broads categories of listening skill is comprehension test. The essential difference is that sub skill test focus on the linguistics component of language, while the comprehension test is concerned with broader communication. Moreover, broader communication is concerned not with the bits and pieces of language but with exchange of facts and ideas, as well as interpreting the speaker intonation.

These categories above was made in order to the teacher can choose the material test for the students level. The level are beginner and advance.

I. Definition of Achievement

Achievement is something done successfully with effort and skill or something was gained or achieved by effort or skill.18 Achievement of students is the result of the interaction between some factors which has

23 influence, they are internal and external factors.10 The main factors is the internal factors, because of the internal factor has more influence than external factors. According to Clark: students’ achievement is influenced by : 70% internal factors and 30% external factors.9

20 The factors above can be classified to be :

  1. Internal factors The classification of internal factors are :

  a. Physical factors The physical factors is everything which was on the body of the students (organs). They are :

  • Eyes - Mouth - Ear - Hand - Feet - Etc

  b. Psychological factors Psychological factors was classified to be :

  1) Intellectual factors The group of intellectual factors are:

l9A. Tabrani Rusyan, Atang Kusdiar dan Zainal Arifin, Pendekatan dalam Proses

  24 Talent - Intelegency -

Etc. - 2) Non Intellectual factors

The group of nonintellectual factors are: Attitude - Interest - Motivation Emotion

  • Habit Etc. -

  2. External factors The classification of external factors are :

  a. Social factors The group of social factors are :

  • Family - School - Society - Groups - Etc

  b. Cultural factors The group of cultural factors are :

  • Knowledge

  25

  • Arts - Customs - Etc.

  c. The Equipment factors The group of equipment factors are :

  • School Facilities - Learning facilities
  • The other equipment in studying

  d. Spiritual factors The spiritual factors is religion.

The all factors above has interactions. It has influence direct or indirectly.

Based on the definition above can be understood: achievement is the result of the students learning. It can be understood the factors which has influence in achievement. The measurement of achievement can be known by test. By the achievement can be known the development of the students.
