4. Note cards or field notes
The researcher prepared note cards. Note cardsfields notes were used to collect the data by writing utterances and relevant contexts of the transcript of the
movie. For the data gathering technique, the researcher collected all the data by
doing some research procedure that will be discussed in the next of this part.
E. Data Analysis Technique
Talking about the data gathering technique, the researcher gathered all the characters’ conversation from the script and observed how they responded to the
conversations each other. The researcher, furthermore, identified and classified the type of adjacency pairs proposed by Levinson 1983. From the identification
and the classification of adjacency pairs, the researcher classified the certain expression into four politeness strategy proposed by Brown and Levinson 1987.
F. Research Procedure
The procedure taken by the writer in this study were:
1. Watching the movie
The researcher tried to understand the content, sequences, and context of the situation of the utterances in the conversation in the movie by watching the
movie. This activity was done more than one time in order to make more
55
understanding and prevented misunderstanding or misinterpreting about the content and the context of the situation in the movie.
2. Analyzing the script
After the researcher watched the movie, the next step was analyzing the script. The researcher must understand the data completely to gain the descriptive
details of the data by comparing the theories. The researcher tried to describe the movie carefully to find out the forms which contains adjacency pairs and
politeness strategies then wrote in a piece of paper. After that, the researcher identified the forms based on the transcription from the movie.
3. Categorizing the characters’ utterances
Based on the identifications of data, the researcher categorized in the adjacency pairs and politeness strategies and the important which were needed the
process of data analysis. The benefit was to make easy the researcher to interpret the data. In the data, there were many types of adjacency pairs occurred in one
scene. However, the researcher only kept the main types so the data will show the appropriate adjacency pairs and also the politeness strategies in having adjacency
pairs. There are 8 types of adjacency pairs proposed by Levinson 1983 and 4 politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson 1987.
4. Interpreting the data and writing up the report
After finishing the categorizing step, the researcher began to interpret the data findings. Also, the researcher started to write the report on the study after

getting all the data. The analysis of the data was in the form of qualitative approach.
The data were discussed based on the theories provided. The researcher focused on adjacency pairs and politeness strategies utterance by the characters in
the movie. Those expressions were classified into two sections: kinds of adjacency
pair’s classifications and the politeness strategies. The following Table 2.0 showed the example of the analysis of the types
of adjacency pairs found in the data by the characters in the movie Sydney White. Description:
FAP : First part of Adjacency Pair SAP : Second part of Adjacency
Pair PST : Preferred Second Turns
DST : Dispreferred Second Turns

to use
WH- question; “What” in order
to get the information. The “?” punctuation mark
showed that it was a question.
