ABSTRACT

MAIKEL SIMBIAK. The Marantaceae Petersen in Western New Guinea. Under
advise of SRI S. TJITROSOEDIRDJO, JOHANIS P. MOGEA and FINN
BORCHSENIUS.
A study on the family of Marantaceae in Western New Guinea based on their
morphological characters has been done. This is the first comprehensive research of
this family in the area. Ten different taxa are recognized, three of which are described
as new species namely Cominsia lmiflora Simbiak, Phacelophrynium gigantifolium
Simbiak and Phacelophrynium longzjlorum Simbiak. The latter consist of two
varieties namely Phacelophrynium longijlorum var. longijlorum Simbiak and

Phacelophrynium longzjlorum var. album Simbiak. One combination is proposed
namely Phacelophrynium macrocephalum (K. Schurn.) Simbiak. A determination
key to genera, species and varieties and detail descriptions to all taxa are provided. A
phylogenetic analysis of the studied taxa was performed based on their morphological
data.
Keywords: Marantaceae, Western New Guinea, morphology, phylogenetic analysis
