ABSTRACT
This dissertation is a comparative study of the Valorous Wife ( P r o v . 3 1 : 1 0 - 3 1 ) a n d
Personified Wisdom (Prov.1:20-33; 8:121,33-36 and 9:1-6-). A study of their
a f f i n i t y , b a s e d o n stylistic analysis, especially on terminological and thematic similarities,
reveals the direct literary relationship between the two. A. study of the direction of influence
regarding this relationship,
based on
the
linguistic and theological analyses, .shows
that the VW poem precedes the PW poem ( h i s t o r i c a l l y ) a n d t h e P W p o e m d e p e n d s

This dissertation also includes a comparative study of t h e V W p o e m a n d

s o m e n a r r a t i v e s a b o u t K a r o B a t a k w o m a n . A discussion of wisdom depicted in
the VW poem and in these Karo Batak narratives, which is based on the
ethnological wisdom approach, indicates that both can be defined as clan
wisdom w h i c h i s b a s e d o n d i v i n e w o r l d o r d e r ( t s a d d i q i n a n c i e n t Israel
and adat in Karo-Batak). This discussion also reveals similar principles of life. In
both, wisdom is depicted as a tool for mastering life; the wise woman is
portrayed as the source of welfare; the idea of "the fear of gods" is shown as the
characteristic of a wise person; kingship is perceived as a p o l i t i c a l t o o l f o r a
j u s t s o c i a l o r d e r a n d s t r o n g brotherhood. These principles of life were the
response to the similar kinship and kingship sy stems in. Israelite and Karo Batak
history.
