In regards the following inquiry of the knowledge in the present study, this
chapter is going to explain about the background of study, statement of problem,
purpose of study, significance of study, scope and limitation of study and definition
of key terms. This stage is important to introduce the foundation of the present study.
Each section will be explained as below.
1.1 Background of Study
English is an international language which has various of vocabularies
required to make a sentence in paragraph. This means people need to have their own
techniques to store varies of vocabularies. Looking at how important vocabularies in
the international language, vocabularies should be given to the learners in their very
beginning of a language study. This idea may help learners in learning the language

correctly. Therefore, teaching proper using appropriate methods will benefit teachers
and learners in learning English as international language.
To master the vocabularies, the students need some strategies to get more

reading, speaking and listening skills, the more they will get vocabularies.
A related study that was conducted by Witri Kurniawati (2012) about

Jatirejo. It wasfound that there are some strategies that are usually used by teacher at
SDN I Jatirejo to enrich the student’s vocabulary, such as: definition, self-defining

strategies used by Chinese students. The result shows that there are several kinds of
learning strategies used by Chinese students to master vocabulary, they are listening
and reading, learning words in sentence, using bilingual dictionary, reading English
books in spare time, studying the spelling.

their everyday communication. Wherever and whenever they go to or stay in the
boarding school they have to use English. In daily activity, in the morning santri will
be given some vocabulary which has been prepared previously by their seniors. The

senior will provide vocabulary by using direct method.
