CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY
A. Object of the Study
The writer analyzes James Dashner‘s novel entitled The Maze Runner. The book The Maze Runner consists of 375 pages and it was first published in October

2009 by Delacorte Press. James Dashner is the author of the New York Times bestselling Maze
Runner series, as well as the Mortality Doctrine series, the 13
th
Reality series, and two books in the Infinity Ring series: A Mutiny in Time and The Iron Empire. He
was born and raised in Georgia, but now lives and writes in Rocky Mountains. There are three major groups of characters in the book of The Maze
Runner; they are Gladers, including Thomas, the main character, Grievers, and Creators. Gladers are a group of people who lives in Glade which is a wall
enclosed area surrounded by a Maze that changes at night. Inside the Maze, there are full of horrific creatures known as Grievers. All of Gladers are a part of
Creators‘ experiments to help and save humanity from the Flare. Grievers are a creature that lives in the Maze and comes out after dark. Its purpose is to harass
and even kill the Gladers who venture into the Maze. Then, Creators are a group of WICKED World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department
organization who create and control all of things including the Glade and its system, Maze, and Grievers. They are also responsible for putting the Gladers in

The Maze Runner tells about Gladers who lose their memories except their names and inhabited the Maze. However, at the end they know that their names
taken from i mportant people‘s name. For example, Thomas comes from Thomas
Alva Edison, Gally comes from Galileo Galilei, Teresa comes from Mother Teresa and so on.
Every day, they must run through the Maze outside the Glade, a place where they live. They are not just running, it is their way to survive because by
running they hope to find a way out of that cursed place. However, the trajectory of the Maze always changes every day, it means that it seems impossible to get
out of that place. One day, the protective stone door is
no longer shut down, it means that the creatures named Griever can go in anytime. Every day, one boy is taken away
and disappear. Thomas, one of the Gladers, think that he must solve the Maze to save himself and the other Gladers. However, it is not easy to escape from the
Maze because there are some Grievers which can kill all of them. Although it is dangerous to leave the Glade, they must take risks in order to change their life.
B. Approach of the Study
