CHAPTER III ANALYSIS
This chapter is divided into two parts. Firstly, the study tries to describe Don Vito Corleone taking the pain from others. Then, the study describes Don Vito
Corleone accepting the happiness from others. Moreover, this study is analyzed through the theories that mentioned previously.
A. Don Vito Corleone services others
This part describes the way of Don Vito Corleone to service others. The description is about Don Vito Corleone who cares to others and makes him services
them such as saving the Italian immigrant, giving some money to his friends, giving the justice, giving advice to his godson, solving the problem with landlord, being the
insurance for his ex-consigliore, saving the orphan, saving his son from the world war. Even he saves the nurse from the death. However, as the human being, Don Vito
Corleone cannot meddle into the problem of husband and wife. Moreover, the description puts theory of morality and psychology to reveal the evidence of the
subject above. As to saving the Italian immigrant, firstly, this study describes the chapter one
of the story. In the beginning, Don Vito Corleone, as the godfather of Corleones, celebrates the wedding party of his daughter, Connie Corleone. With his humility,

Don Vito invites his friends, old friends, the neighbor, and some enemies. They come to wedding party with the pride of the noble, because of Don Vito as the head of
crime syndicate facing them by himself. Mario Puzo, the author of The Godfather, describes Don Vito Corleone as
good Sicilian. Don Vito celebrates the wedding party of his daughter likes the tradition of Sicilian; never refuses what his friends request in wedding party of the
daughter. Hence, Don accepts all of his friends who request some helps. Why do they bother your father with business on a day like this?
Kay asked. Michael laughed again. Because they know that by tradition no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughters wedding
day. And no Sicilian ever lets a chance like that go by. Puzo 11.
Don knows how to service his friends who need helps. Of course, as the godfather he can do anything with his power. In addition, Don Vito not only does
what his friends ask for, but also Don Vito puts the problem of them in his heart and shows his empathy. The empathy of Don Vito can give a sign to the one who talks
with him that Don Vito cares about the problem. Moreover, if Don Vito has care with the problem, of course, he will care about every problem of his friends.
Just like when his old friend, Nazorine, comes to the wedding party. Nazorine needs some helps to make the love of Nazorine‟s daughter, an Italian immigrant
named Enzo who will deport to Italy, to be an American and stay in America with

peace. Don Vito of course can bring it into reality easily. Even Don tries to free the worried of Nazorine.
The Don walked Nazorine up and down the room, his hand on the bakers shoulder, his head nodding with understanding to keep up the
mans courage. When the baker had finished, Don Corleone smiled at him and said, My dear friend, put all your worries aside. He went on
to explain very carefully what must be done. The Congressman of the district must be petitioned. The Congressman would propose a special
bill that would allow Enzo to become a citizen Puzo 8.
In this case, Don Vito not only takes the pain of Nazorine, but also he gives the problem solving. As usually, he shows his empathy to assure that the problem of
Nazorine is his problem too. As the true godfather who gives some advices to his godson, Don Vito makes Nazorine releases his worried. Don Vito decides to make
Enzo to be the citizen of America and it cannot make him deported back to Italy. Don Vito will arrange it with congressional representative perfectly and make the old
friend Nazorine loses his worry about Enzo. Hence, the superego of Don that contains of conscience moves him to take the pain and to give the problem solving for his old
friend, Nazorine. As mentioned previously, morality is representation of superego that applies
moral standard. Don Vito helps Nazorine to solve the problem is because of his superego attracts the morality of Don Vito. He takes the pain, releases the worried,
and solves the problem of his friend.

As to giving some money to his friends, Don Vito shows his humility. After Don Vito gives some helps to Nazorine, the one named Anthony Cappola comes.
Anthony needs some helps. He decides to open the pizzeria. Unfortunately, he does not have enough money to open it. He just needs five hundred dollars to open the
pizzeria that he wants. Hence, he comes to Don Vito ask for money. His name was Anthony Coppola and he was the son of a man Don
Corleone had worked with in the railroad yards in his youth. Coppola needed five hundred dollars to open a pizzeria; for a deposit on
fixtures and the special oven. For reasons not gone into, credit was not available. The Don reached into his pocket and took out a roll of bills.
It was not quite enough. He grimaced and said to Tom Hagen, Loan me a hundred dollars, Ill pay you back Monday when I go to the
bank. The supplicant protested that four hundred dollars would be ample, but Don Corleone patted his shoulder, saying, apologetically,
This fancy wedding left me a little short of cash. He took the money Hagen extended to him and gave it to Anthony Coppola with his own
roll of bills Puzo 8.
To give five hundred dollars just for Anthony Cappola who wants to open the pizzeria is easy for Don Vito. However, at the same time, Don Vito shows his
humility to Anthony and his consigliore, Tom Hagen. Consciously, Don Vito loans a hundred dollars from his consigliore. It is because of his money in the pocket is not
enough to give Anthony who needs five hundred dollars. Don Vito shows that even though he has a lot of money, he still wants to loan
some money to his consigliore. Even though the supplicant protests that four hundred dollars in the pocket of Don Vito is enough for him, but Don Vito refuses that protest.

Don Vito still loans the money from Tom Hagen and gives all of the money to Anthony. He wants to be humble in front of both his friend and his consigliore.
As to giving the justice, Don Vito does his role in the best way. The old friend of Don Vito, Amerigo Bonasera, who never declares his friendship, comes to Don
Vito Corleone for request some helps. He gets problem; his daughter has get mistreatment by two American guys. It makes her face is so bad and have to get
treatment in the hospital for a view month. As the father, Amerigo Bonasera comes to the police station and brings that case to the court. However, Bonasera does not get
the justice as he wants; to punish those guys equivalent. He disappoints with the result of the court. For him, the court in America and the police can bring the justice
for him. Hence, he comes to Don Vito Corleone ask for justice. As respected man, Don Vito Corleone only needs the declaration of friendship
to him if someone needs his help. No matter how difficult the problems, Don Vito will never refuse it. However, as the old friend of Don Vito, Amerigo Bonasera never
declares it. Bonasera never declares that Don Vito is his friend or his godfather. Nevertheless, Bonasera comes to Don Vito for request now.
Don Vito hates the one such as Amerigo Bonasera. The one, who never comes as friend, never declares the friendship, but ask for help and ask for justice. However,
Bonasera persuades. He persuades Don Vito for help and at last, he declares his friendship to Don Vito.

Of course, the declaration of Bonasera makes a conscience that consists in the superego Don Vito personality moves to help his friend. The id in personality of Don
Vito Corleone loses the power to influence Don Vito to be an arrogant. In addition, superego affects the decision of Don Vito. Moreover, Don Vito decides to help
Bonasera but he does not want to kill those guys who mistreatment his daughter. But if you had come to me, my purse would have been yours. If you
had come to me for justice those scum who ruined your daughter would be weeping bitter tears this day. If by some misfortune an
honest man like yourself made enemies they would become my enemies--- the Don raised his arm, finger pointing at Bonasera--- and
then, believe me, they would fear you.
Bonasera bowed his head and murmured in a strangled voice, Be my friend. I accept.
Don Corleone put his hand on the mans shoulder. Good, he said, you shall have your justice. Some day, and that day may never come,
I will call upon you to do me a service in return. Until that day, consider this justice a gift from my wife, your daughters godmother.

If Amerigo Bonasera declares his friendship to Don Vito Corleone first, of course, that accident will never happen. Amerigo Bonasera does not have to come to
the police station or come to the court for justice. He only needs to tell the story to Don Vito and everything will get the justice. The
Bonasera‟s pain is because of declaration of Bonasera is late. Now, Don Vito will take the pain of Amerigo
Bonasera who has just declared his friendship. In addition, Don Vito will give the justice as Amerigo Bonasera ask for.

As to giving the advice for his godson, Johnny Fontane, he can do his role well. In the wedding party of Connie, Johnny comes and faces his father with many
problems. He says that there is problem in his voice and makes him cannot sing for a long time. In addition, the problem of his ex-wife affects his mental and life overall.
Don Vito Corleone is the real godfather especially for Johnny. Don knows that he needs some helps of his godfather. Honestly, Don Vito is angry to Johnny
because of he left and divorces his ex-wife However, he cannot let Johnny fall into the trouble. As godfather, Don Vito gives an advice to godson, Don Vito tells that the
source of problem of Johnny is because of divorcing his first wife to catch another girl.
Even though Don Vito disagrees with divorcing of Johnny, he still regards Johnny as his godson. He wants to be the one who wants to listen what Johnny says.
He puts his self as the cure of the Johnny problem. Moreover, he tells that even though Johnny has left his ex-wife, but Johnny has to give the quality time for his
child. It was rare that Don Corleone showed exasperation. I didnt tell you to
get married again. Do what you want. Its good you wish to be a father to your children. A man who is not a father to his children can never be
a real man. But then, you must make their mother accept you. Who says you cant see them every day? Who says you cant live in the same
house? Who says you cant live your life exactly as you want to live it? Puzo 17

As to being the insurance for his ex- consigliore, don Vito does it well. Before Tom Hagen, Don Vito has great consigliore named Gonco Abbandando. However,
Genco is sick and Tom Hagen takes his position. In the beginning of the story, Genco cannot come to the Connie wedding party is because of he is in the hospital. After the
wedding party is done, Don Vito takes his sons and godson to see Genco in the hospital. Don Vito knows that Genco is in agony.
Don Vito comes in the hospital. However, the Doctor forbids him to face Genco because of the Genco condition. The Doctor thinks that it will be better if
everyone let Genco dies in peace. Nevertheless, Don says something that can assure the Doctor;
Then there is nothing more for you to do, said Don Corleone. We will take up the burden. We will comfort him. We will close his eyes.
We will bury him and weep at his funeral and afterwards we will watch over his wife and daughters. Puzo 22
For Don, Genco is the best consigliore that he ever has. A Sicilian who has the balls likes the real Sicilian. However, Genco will die. Don says those words to the
Doctor is because of Don can keep his words. Of course, Don is ready to take the burden of Genco up. Don will comfort him and will close his eyes. Moreover, Don
Vito will take the pain of Genco. Don Vito will care the family of Genco after he died. The children of genco
will get the best school for their education. Mrs. Genco will never worry about the

life anymore. Genco family will be prosperous even though the father dies. Because of Don Vito will take the pain of Genco family.
As to saving the orphan named Tom Hagen, Don Vito plays his role well. Tom Hagen takes the position of Genco Abbandando a year ago. It is because of the
condition of Genco that cannot work maximally. Actually, Tom Hagen is an orphan who takes by Sonny Corleone to Corleone‟s house. He is sick, and because of Don
Vito empathize, Don brings him to the doctor. Don knows that Tom Hagen‟s life is
unfortunate. Hence, Don Vito lets him to stay in Corleone‟s house and get the
education like Corleone‟s sons.
In the most natural way, without a word being spoken or the matter discussed in any fashion, Don Corleone had permitted the boy to stay
in his household. Don Corleone himself took the boy to a special doctor and had his eye infection cured. He sent him to college and law
school. In all this the Don acted not as a father but rather as a guardian. There was no show of affection but oddly enough the Don treated
Hagen more courteously than his own sons, did not impose a parental will upon him. It was the boys decision to go to law school after
college Puzo 26.
The force of conscience that appears in the superego of Don Vito makes Tom Hagen, who is orphan, changes to be an educated man. Then, he change to be the
lawyer and get in the business of Corleones family. Moreover, Tom Hagen is the consigliore now.

Don Vito cares Tom Hagen. It depicts when Tom Hagen asks for the college and wants to be a lawyer. All of Don Vito does, because of he knows the past of
unfortunate Tom Hagen. In this case, Don Vito tries to take the pain of Tom Hagen life and give him a better life. Moreover, Don Vito gives him respect.
Don Vito chooses Tom Hagen because he can play his role as Sicilian consigliore even though he is German-Irish. Don Vito alwasys asks his opinion for
every problem. However, in the last story of The Godfather, Michel changes to be the successor of his father. He changes to be the next Don for the Corleones.
Besides the transition of Don Vito to Don Michel, Tom Hagen as the consigliore has discharged. He lost his position in the Corleones. Of course it makes
him disappointed. He tells that Michel is too weak because his strategy is nothing. The enemies of Corleones hit them, but Michel does not do anything. Hence, Tom
Hagen is disappointed. In this time, Don Vito, as the father of Michel and the one who is respected by
Tom Hagen, gives some advice for Tom Hagen. He gives insurance to Tom Hagen that his youngest son, Michel Corleone, can run the Corleones. Tom Hagen only has
to believe in Michel and Don Vito and everything will be all right. The Don finally spoke. Tom, its not just Michael. I advised him on
these matters. There are things that may have to be done that I dont want in any way to be responsible for. That is my wish, not Michaels.
I never thought you were a bad Consigliere, I thought Santino a bad Don, may his soul rest in peace. He had a good heart but he wasnt the

Don Vito shows how powerful his sounds. The advice of Don Vito can bring both freed the worry of Hagen and assured the position of Michel as the new Don for
The Corleones. Tom Hagen just needs insurance from the one who is respected by him. In addition, Don Vito has to strengthen the position of Michel who is just to be
the next Don for The Corleones. As to saving his son, Michel Corleone, from the world war, Don Vito does his
role in the good way. The youngest son of Don Vito Corleone, Michel Corleone, is different from two older son of Don. In the beginning of story, Michel is the war hero
of the World War who does not want to involve into the business of the family. He knows the activity inside. Therefore, he wants not to get involved.
He enrolls his self to be an army when the World War II happens. Don Vito has no intention to let Michel died because of the war. Then, the war is over, and
Michel gets back to his life as common citizen. In addition, because of Michel gets a bad wound, he discharges from his job to be an army. Actually, the discharging of
Michel to be a common citizen is because of Don Vito arrangement.

When Michael Corleone was discharged early in 1945 to recover from a disabling wound, he had no idea that his father had arranged his

way. Don Vito taking the pain of others firstly happens when he was a young. In that time, the young Vito just to be a respected man because of he can clean off Fanucci
„the black hand‟.
Mrs. Colombo, who is the neighbor of Don Vito, comes to him for request. She has problem with landlord of her room; forbid to keep the animal especially the
dog in the room or get off from the apartment. Mrs. Colombo cannot clean off her dog and she does not want to move on to another apartment. Hence, she needs help of
Don Vito to solve her problems.

Don Vito knows the reason of Mrs. Colombo for the dog. The dog is the entertainer and friend for the widow such as Mrs. Colombo. In other hand, Mrs.
Colombo does not want to move because of her old friend be in the apartment. It will be the pain if Mrs. Colombo takes the landlord rules. Therefore, Don Vito decides to
talk with the landlord. Signor Roberto? Vito said in a surprised voice. Of course he will.
Hes a good-hearted fellow. Once I explain how things are with you hell take pity on your misfortunes. Now dont let it trouble you any

The young Vito is the kind man even though he is just to be the respected man. He helps Mrs. Colombo the widow is just because of his conscience that
appears in his superego drives his personality to be a kind. In addition, he does not think badly to the landlord, Mr. Roberto who forbids Mrs. Colombo bring the dog in
the apartment. To solve the problem he decides to talk reason with the landlord. Moreover, the problem is solving. Mr. Roberto lets Mrs. Colombo to stay in his
apartment with her dog, of course. As to saving the nurse from the murderer, Don Vito plays his role well.
Similar with Mrs. Colombo, the same problem happens to Filomena the nurse. In that time, Filomena has problem with Luca Brasi, who known as the murderer. Brasi
orders Filomena to kill his infant that just born. As the nurse, it is too contradictive

with her heart. She does not want to kill the infant but if she does not kill it, her life will end. Filomena chooses to kill the infant and report it to the police.
Police under arrest Luca Brasi. However, Filomena is still afraid with luca brasi. She tells the story to Don Vito Corleone. As a kind man, Don Vito calms
Filomena and tells that she never be worried. Don Vito will care everything about Luca Brasi and assure Filomena.
Though Don Corleone assured Filomena that she had nothing to fear from either Luca Brasi or the police, she had no peace. Her nerves
were shattered and she could no longer work at her profession. Finally she persuaded her husband to sell the grocery store and they returned
to Italy. Her husband was a good man, had been told everything and understood. But he was a weak man and in Italy squandered the
fortune they had both slaved in America to earn. And so after he died she had become a servant. So Filomena ended her story. She had
another glass of wine and said to Michael, I bless the name of your father. He always sent me money when I asked, he saved me from
Brasi. Tell him I say a prayer for his soul every night and that he shouldnt fear dying. Puzo 197
Filomena faces the death called Luca Brasi. Luca Brasi targets Filomena because of Filomena reports the killing that did by his self. Nevertheless, as the head
of crime syndicate, Don Vito Corleone saves and solves the problem of Filomena. Don Vito arranges in order to Filomena can free from Luca Brasi target. Even Don
Vito always sends some money to her. It indicates that Don Vito is not only taking the pain but also cure the pain of his supplicant.

As the one who has great power, Don Vito uses his power wisely. He uses his power not for mistreatment someone. However, he uses it to help the one who needs
him. He arranges the best problem solving for the supplicants just for makes them do not worry anymore. He is not only taking the pain of others, but also transforms to be
the cure for others. Even Don Vito takes the pain of his enemy, Tattaglia. As to releasing the worry of his enemy, Don Vito does it sincerely. The
Tattaglias, who supports Sollozzo to sell drugs in New York City, has lost the youngest son, Bruno Tattaglia. The Tattaglias response it, and kill the elder son of
The Corleones, Sonny Corleone. Moreover, that situation makes the war in New York City.
However, as the head of the Corleones, Don Vito does not want to get is war even though his eldest son has killed by the enemy. He prefers to make the peace.
Hence, he calls all of the families in New York City, to achieve the peace. The Tattaglias is still afraid, though Don Vito declares the peace. The
Tattaglias is afraid because of Don Vito may do the vendetta. Don Vito may take a revenge and kill all of the Tattaglias when the peace run. However, Don Vito assures
to Tattaglias that it will never happen. What manner of men are we then, if we do not have our reason, he
said. We are all no better than beasts in a jungle if that were the case. But we have reason, we can reason with each other and we can reason
with ourselves. To what purpose would I start all these troubles again, the violence and the turmoil? My son is dead and that is a misfortune

Don Vito assures that he will never take revenge. He will never revenge the tattaglias who is the cause of sonny corleone‟s death. Don Vito just let it be
happened. In addition, he will never seek knowledge of the truth of Sonny Corleone‟s death. Moreover, it makes the Tattaglias lose the worry about vendetta.
It indicates the power of Don Vito is big. In addition, the power of him can make the enemies are afraid. However, Don Vito uses his power wisely. He does not
want to be an arrogant. Even Don Vito brings the peace by his power. The power of Don Vito Corleone is not always can taking the pain of others.
It happens to the daughter of Don Vito who needs some helps from his father. Unfortunately, Don Vito cannot do more to help his daughter because of his belief;
never get involved in the problem of others family. Connie Corleone has marriage with Carlo Rizzi. Unfortunately, Connie is not
happy because of her husband is drunken man and always slaps his wife when he gets drunk. Connie tells it to her mother and her father. She tells everything about the
mistreatment from her husband. Don Vito knows about it, but he does not want to help his daughter.

She had found her parents coolly unsympathetic and curiously amused. Her mother had had a little sympathy and had even asked her father to
speak to Carlo Rizzi. Her father had refused. She is my daughter, he had said, but now she belongs to her husband. He knows his duties.
Even the King of Italy didnt dare to meddle with the relationship of husband and wife. Go home and learn how to behave so that he will

Don Vito believes that even the king of Italy cannot involve to the problem of husband and wife. For Don Vito, it is too personal. The field of relationship between
