i. Preface

This document specifies the interface to a Sensor Observation Service, hereinafter “SOS”. The SOS is one of a family of standards and specifications that make up the OGC Sensor Web Enablement activity, hereinafter “SWE”. Currently, the other specifications that pertain to SWE are Sensor Model Language SensorML, Observations and Measurements OM, Sensor Planning Service SPS, Transducer Markup Language TML, Sensor Alert Service SAS, and Web Notification Service WNS. Work on the predecessor to SOS, Sensor Collection Service SCS, began during the OGC Web Services 1.1 OWS 1.1 testbed initiative and focused mainly on the interoperable interface requirements for in-situ sensors and sensor networks. During the OWS 1.2 initiative, the SCS effort focused on the requirements for dynamic remote sensors and sensor networks and defined a more explicit interface employing SensorML. The SOS builds on previous SCS efforts and also incorporates an interface employing TML. Suggested additions, changes, and comments on this standard are welcome and encouraged. Such suggestions may be submitted by OGC portal message, email message, or by making suggested changes in an edited copy of this document. This specification deprecates previous versions including version 05-088. ii. Document terms and definitions This document uses the specification terms defined in Subclause 5.3 of [OGC 06-121r3], which is based on the ISOIEC Directives, Part 2. Rules for the structure and drafting of International Standards. In particular, the word “shall” not “must” is the verb form used to indicate a requirement to be strictly followed to conform to this specification. iii.
